Installing 4D 6.0.6:
The installer places an ACI folder at the root level of your start-up disk and completes the installation of the 4D 6 database. There are other, separate components accompanying this database package.
If you install other separate components such as the demo apps and the 4D plug-in extras etc, then do all of the installations you require before moving the ACI folder to any other location. The additional installers, all look for the ACI folder at the root level of your drive and will create fresh ACI folders in that location if you have moved the initial ACI database folder before completing all of your installations.
I recommend that you do install the Demos package (which should have been named "Database Examples") as you can then get a good feel for this program by picking these example apps apart.
This package also installs the 4D Runtime engine:
4D Runtime is designated as Redistributable according to the 4th Dimension License Agreement and can be freely distributed according to the terms and agreements of that license.
Meaning: You can create standalone databases and distribute these to others along with the runtime engine (then 3rd party doesn't need the full 4D application to use your database).

Comments
Yep, I also use FileMaker 3 pro,
can´t beat that one.
@Euryale:
Me neither
For my (limited) personal needs in a database, I haven't required anything more than FileMaker Pro and its much simpler "user friendliness".
Don't split the files lower than 40 MB parts,
because there is a reason why the download limit exists.
Bandwith costs.
Maybe this will be solved one day, but this decision is up to Balrog and Maedi only.
Don't ask for skipping the download limit, please.
I could never run this one
@Euryale:
No matter. I'm more concerned that this archive exists in any form. I'm very grateful to it being here (I had to do the "splits" for my recent full Acrobat 3.0 upload too).
BTW That is an awesome photo. I'd thought that it may have been from a Pre-Raphaelite sketch of 150 or so years ago. Anyway, I think it is stunning and very beautiful. Now I don't feel so afraid if "baby" comes back - or Medusa - or the Gorgon - or...
That´s too bad they reduced the size limit, bummer!
BTW...
thanks but this is not an avatar, it´s my official facebook photo with a cool photoshop antique fx
actually it´s the second time I´ve used a photo of me in MG
the other photo is still ´hidden´ somewhere in one of the screenshots,
one day you´ll find it.
...but I like the other creepy demonic baby,
you´ll see her soon muahahaha
@Euryale: I think the 400Mb size allowance is a "was" and it is now indeed under a much smaller limit. I don't recall where I saw 40 MB as being the cut-off size but it has stuck with me, since.
You can still upload much larger files of course, but they won't be available for downloading - and I want this to also be available for DL - See this page for example, where you will see instead of a DL link, a "Archived (59.06 MB) Temporarily unavailable due to high bandwidth costs" message.[Edit] The Up/DL limits for the Mac Garden have since been lifted
btw: Love your cool avatar. Please don't change it for a while (your last one was so scary for me)
This certainly looks pretty cool...
else, I might be wrong but as far as I remember, the 40Mb file size limit no longer applies,
I remember the file size allowed now is 400Mb to MacGarden
so i think you can upload the whole thing without spliting it up.
...that was for Mike Tom Tom
@amatecha asks:
I did this because (1) File uploads to the Garden are 40 MBs or less, (2) I wanted this to be archived and still be available from the Garden. To circumvent these restrictions I split the archive.
By all means, join and post it up for others to cut 2 minutes of install time off but please don't remove the two Garden hosted archive parts...
That said, part 1 (Download link at top of screen) is still a broken link from here
Adding.. The alternative link in body of page labelled "Download for Part 1 (until top link above is fixed)" is the actual working Garden link at amazonaws. It is what the top link should be. Admins!
Uh, why is this split into two files that have to be extracted in such a backwards manner? If I make these files available elsewhere, no one's going to have those instructions included. Guess I'll download this, extract it and recompress as a single file to avoid this problem for others who want the program.
@finkmac spotted:
Ah yes, quite right, well spotted. The top "Download" amazonaws link is pointing to a "4d-6-1.sit". Whereas it should be pointing to a "4d-6-1_0.sit"
I have put a temporary but correct link into the file description area. I suggest using that link until the top link gets corrected by the Admins. The 2nd "Download" link for part 2 "4d-6-2.sit" is working OK. Thanks.
Part 1 is down…
