Macintosh Appearance Manager for Mac OS 7.1 to 7.6.1

Gives Macs running an OS earlier than 8.0 the ability to run apps and games that require the Appearance Manger to be installed

From the included Installation Read Me:

The Appearance Manager represents Apple's newest innovations in interface development and several programs, including PandoCalendar, require the Appearance Manager to operate. If you are using MacOS 8.0 or later, you already have the Appearance Manager and can stop reading now. For those of you using MacOS 7.1 - 7.6.1:

...When you restart, your Macintosh will have the MacOS 8 Platinum Appearance. This will change the way windows, buttons, Finder icons, and the menubar look. The menus will also stay down when you click on their titles. If you wish to return to the old Mac OS 7 look, open the Appearance control panel, and click the Options button. Then disable "System-wide Platinum Appearance" and set the system font to Chicago. After restarting, your Mac will return to the old SSW 7 look under applications which do not specifically require the Appearance Manager.

Compatibility
Architecture: 68k PPC

For Mac OS 7.1 to 7.6.1 only. Runs well under Basilisk II, Possibly under Mini vMac (untested by me). Not useful for SheepShaver.

[Amended]
Can be used with SheepShaver, if SheepShaver is using an "Old World ROM" and running Mac OS 7.5.3 to 7.6.1. Tested only with Mac OS 7.6.1 by me, but my SheepShaver is emulating a PowerMac 9500/200 (which originally shipped with Mac OS 7.5.3).

Is that a special version of Mini vMac ? I thought it emulated only B&W Compact Macs ?

Yes, there is ongoing development to get Mini vMac to run on Mac II ROMs. Source and binaries are of alpha quality at this point. You can get Mac II emulation with up to 256 colors. The sourceforge page with better info here.

9" monochrome monitor an issue? Just get a Micron Xceed greyscale card!

Lovely! Laughing out loud

16 shades of gray And Mac OS 8.1? A Mac SE/30 and the "I Wish..." INIT?

Laughing out loud Regardless of whether it runs on Mini vMac or not, Appearance Manager really was meant for color Macs with Mac OS 7, so they could adopt the look of OS 8. As much as I love a little 9" monochrome monitor, it can't do Appearance Manager justice.

ADD: And in any case, Mini vMac's Mac II emulation is really really in its infancy...

I know there are settings to allow you to compile your own to support ROMs other than the Mac Plus.

Anyway, with the Compact Macs, all the essential system fonts, Monaco 9, Chicago 12, etc, etc. were stored in the Mac ROM. Just wonder if it was wise to try to override them.

Under Mini vMac (Mac II emulation), it corrupts so horribly, that you cannot change the system font (if you don't like Charcoal). Then, only SSW reinstallation helps to get rid of it completely.

Which version of SSW are you running in Mini vMac (Mac II)? I did say that this software might run under Mini vMac. I have Mini vMac too but not a Mac II ROM (does this give you greyscale under Mini VMac? I would think that the Appearance Manager on a mono screen would look crap (probably why I hadn't bothered going there) - Regardless, the documentation should be read through before installing it. An important paragraph was quoted in the description on this page:

If you wish to return to the old SSW 7 look, open the Appearance control panel, and click the Options button. Then disable "System-wide Platinum Appearance" and set the system font to Chicago. After restarting, your Mac will return to the old SSW 7 look under applications which do not specifically require the Appearance Manager."

The Appearance Manager for pre-OS 8 Macintosh was released primarily to allow newer Macintosh programs that require the Appearance Manager to work, run on pre-OS 8 Macs too. Not so much as to "make your old Mac look like its running the latest OS" (which at the time, it did just that).

By disabling the "System-wide Platinum Appearance", your Mac looks and behaves just as it should under a SSW 7.x OS and if it happens to run a program that requires the OS 8 "Platinum look", the Appearance Manager would deliver to the system the correct windows etc only at that time it needed to (while the program requiring it runs).

As for the impression that "only SSW reinstallation helps to get rid of it completely.":

You do not need to reinstall the SSW to "get rid of" this software. To get rid of the Appearance Manager completely; All you need to do is drag the Appearance Control Panel and extension (and fonts if not wanted) to the Trash and reintroduce any CPs and Extensions the documentation had recommended disabling before you installed the Appearance Manager. Reboot your Mac and all will be as before.

Perhaps too; As there were (documented) two System CPs and Extns to look for and disable before installing the Appearance Manager. If you had not disabled these INITs beforehand this could explain why you had problems running this software.

But then again perhaps it is just incompatible with Mini vMac.

The DL link for the Appearance manager has been corrected and now works properly, thanks.
