FYI, I've created a version of this page with correct information at http://macintoshgarden.org/games/ares. This page is in the wrong location and has almost no correct information on it (aside from what bertyboy quoted below). The one problem is that I couldn't re-upload the 1.0/1.1.0 download posted here; Ambrosia's site only provides 1.2.0. If someone else could give it a try, I'd be much obliged.
One major piece of information the new page includes is that the game is now open source and the port runs on OS X.
For those unable to use Google to find out more about this epic game, from cnet:
After a successful mission to establish friendly contact with an advanced alien species, the humans of the ship Apollo 2000 learn that Earth has been invaded and occupied by the Cantharan Order, a zealous alien civilization on a crusade to conquer "primitive" cultures (see screen shot). Fortunately, the humans gain the assistance of the Ishiman Protectorate, which agrees to help the humans fight their new enemies and refit the Apollo 2000 with powerful weaponry. Since the Apollo is no longer a vessel of peace, a new name is in order for the craft: Ares.
As an action and strategy game, Ares combines the adrenaline rush of arcade-style space shooters with the challenge of plotting real-time strategy moves against your opponents. Smooth dynamic scaling and zooming gives you detailed views of everything from tactical to overhead-perspective views, and nice graphics, support for multiplayer network games, and a compelling soundtrack round out this game. Ares has a registration fee of $25.
