A multimedia application authoring platform created by Macromedia. It allows users to build applications built on a movie metaphor, with the user as the "director" of the movie. (Wikipedia)
Probably the most significant release of Director to this point, Director 4 introduces a number of features such as lists, parent scripts, compiled and protected Lingo, and more. It is also the first version of Director to use a cross-platform, single-forked file format that can also be used on Windows machines (with previous versions of Director, you had to convert movies into a format suitable for Windows playback using the "Gaffer").
In order to prevent any inconvenient disk requesting, you must mount all the 10 disk images first and then run the installer.
Also included as a bonus is a separate download of the 68k version of the 4.0.4 updater. When this update is applied, you can also make PowerPC-native and fat binary projectors. Or download this update and corresponding file to update Help file to 4.0.4 from official site:

Alrightie - did it.
Updaters are always valuable and copies can can so easily become inaccessable over time. So, yes, please upload the updater to this page.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH, good sir, for uploading this legendary multimedia tool. I wanted to upload a copy of Director 4 I had on the CD-ROM that came with my Official Macromedia Director Studio book, but unfortunately the files on it were in an encrypted format and I have absolutely NO IDEA how to decrypt them. By uploading Director 4, you saved me the trouble of looking for a way to open those darn .ENC files.
I also happen to have the version 4.0.4 updater, and can upload it if you like.
EDIT: Now, if only somebody could upload Director 5 and 6 here...
