Many still claim that version 5.1a is the "Best. Word. Ever." People swore by it so much that the later Word 98 offered the choice of 5.1-style menus.

I did not know the EDIT trick until you mention the EDIT word,
so I figured
yes it works.
Doesn't the edit trick work? I tried with IE 7 or 8, and it works. Sometimes it helps to switch to another browser.
What is the trick to download a file when the XML ERROR PAGE shows?
I Can´t download the PersonalizedWord file.
THX
In the second download I have added PersonalizeWord 1.0.
It is looking for an external unlocked disk. Try making a floppy of the install disk, or installing from an external drive, such as flash drive.
Separately is better. My email address is tnv...@xooville.com and there's no rush.
Word 5.1a it is. I need your email address and I need to know whenever you want the six disk images on a single message or each one separately.
Try Word Perfect,
personally, I think is better than MS Word :

Sounds great to me! If 5.1a truly is the best Word ever, I'd go with that.
In that case tell me what version of Word you want (as the archive packs several) and I'll encode it as a MacBinary file you can decode on Mini vMac. Sounds good to you?
Sure. It works great. But it doesn't help me. I'm limited to 4MB of memory because of MiniVMac, though, which means that I can't install newer versions of Stuffit; I'm stuck with 4.0. And the archive here won't open in 4.0. I am at a loss here. So I can't just use ImportFI to import the archive into the emulated hard drive.
I work on this stuff sporadically; the next time I tackle it, I'm going to try to find a Windows version of Stuffit Expander that's new enough to open this archive but old enough that will expand stuff as .bin files.
Have you tried ImportFl?
Now how do I use it? Stuffit Expander 2009 for Windows no longer expands to .bin format, and on minivmac I can't run any Stuffit newer than 4.0, which won't open this archive; I'm in a bootstrap situation!
(tents fingers) Excellent.
I have MS Word v3.0.1, alas not the orginal install media, but still a working copy. I'll download, add it in and re-upload when I get the chance.
Word 4 crashes on OS 9
Word 5.1 is OK, please consider using it as a light alternative to Word 98 when you don't need full compatibility with newer versions.
>You may just have to convert images to "read/write" instead of "read-only."
That's what I tried. Didn't work out. But trying a different emulator sounds like a good tip. I might look into that.
You may just have to convert images to "read/write" instead of "read-only." I've installed it myself on actual hardware from these images before. Sometimes if installers offer a "customize" option it's better to install that way, also. Some emulators don't seem to handle images as well as they should, either. I know that Mini vMac doesn't respect the "read-only" status of disk images and will change them.
I noticed that as well. It did install, without a hitch, on an actual system running MacOS 9.2.2. I guess I should try to make some new images on that machine and see if they work in the emulator.
Word 4 and 5 work great, but unfortunately 5.1a is not installable – at least not for me under Mac OS 7.5.5 and Basilisk II. The installer keeps complaining that the install disk or installation file is locked and hence, Word cannot be installed. The funny thing is, the file's not locked and the error message remains when I convert the (originally locked) disk images into unlocked ones...
Edit: Replaced 'xxx 7' by 'Mac OS 7' - IIGS User
Great working copy. Runs on systems 6-9 without problems, in vMac, Basilisk, and SheepShaver.
