This is the full standalone version of Microsoft Word 98 for Macintosh. The above DL (40.15 MB);
MD5 checksum & filename: f564c3a67c668b06fd396f8243ba9600 *mac-word98.sit
After all the hatred that was directed at MS Word 6, Microsoft returned to having a Mac-specific development team for Word, and the result was Word 98. Though it requires Power PC and is more bloated than before, it packs a lot of features and can even emulate the user interface for everybody's favorite prior Word version, 5.1a. Also, it is file compatible with Microsoft's post-'97 versions of Word, across platforms.
CompatibilityIn 1997, Microsoft formed the Macintosh Business Unit as an independent group within Microsoft focused on writing software for Mac OS. Its first version of Word, Word 98, was released with Office 98 Macintosh Edition. Document compatibility reached parity with Word 97, and it included features from Word 97 for Windows, including spell and grammar checking with squiggles. Users could choose the menus and keyboard shortcuts to be similar to either Word 97 for Windows or Word 5 for Mac OS.
Minimum System Requirements for Microsoft Word 98:
Runs on SheepShaver, although I find it to be unstable (crash-prone). YMMV
Comments
@TataMisia: Thank you! Especially for thinking "outside of the box". Excellent screenshots, as well. - ".15MB" over the limit 'tho... hmmm...
[Edit] mrdav: Thanks for the updated RS link. Just what it needed.
[Edit] my burbling on, snipped
@Swedebear: Thanks for that. I appreciated that you had made the upload, too. I'm just hoping that Attila or someone who has archived Attila's upload of Word 98 can do the same.
…some day I´ll learn to read too. I´ve removed the stuff…
the things you do in haste
Thanks to the recent uploader. Loved the name of the archive
But this is not the upload that Attila made, which was a CD image of a full install, uninstalled MS Word 98 CD image. Yours is a pre-installed Office 98 (and a page for that already exists here at the Garden). I am really hoping to see the archive that Attila had originally uploaded, surface again. This page is for Word 98, not Office 98.
@Attila: Would it be possible to upload your copy to an alternative site, too? Link above is unavailable and edit trick is also broken.
my old performa is in the bussiness again! thanks
OK. From Monday from our office...
We upload MS Office 98
Yeah, just be sure it's complete, preferably an image of a CD. Those Microsoft apps had many, many files in folders that came with them and are installed the first time you run the programs. My own upload of Word 98 is an image of my CD.
OK. But I can upload MS Office98? Its OK?
The '98 applications are probably fine, but the 2001 Office versions could still run on easily on a lot of machines still in use, PPC's running OS X, so it's probably wise to hold off, especially because Microsoft hasn't made very many versions since then.
and ms office 98, what you thing?
I'd be careful with Office 2001.
I have both, Office 98 and Microsoft office 2001, and Both work great in Mac OS 9 (SheepShaver)
and I would like to upload them just that I don't know if they are still Warez,
so If Maedi or Balrog give me the green light to upload them, I have the time to do it.
Yes, MS Office 2001 work in Mac OS 9.
Distribution must to be dedicated to Mac OS 9, I thing.
Look at torrents:

It's an image of my cd with updates. Does Word 2001 really work with OS9? I have a disc of it but it only works with OSX, though it's an upgrade of Office 98. Anyway I'm not anxious to have recent software on the site, just real abandonware.
Is this a real image of the install media, or from a pirate copy ? I don't want to consume 40MB of the sites bandwidth to find out.
Does it include any of the patches Microsoft released for the Office 98 suite ? Albeit only the SSL patch related to Word 98.
I still have my Office 98 cd, and my Office 2001 cd. Office 2001 was probably some of the best software ever written for OS9 - but to put it up may have Microsoft threatening the site.
Not quite – Word 2001 was the last one.
Can't believe I didn't upload this before; I forgot somehow. It's the last version to run on the classic Mac OS.
