QuarkXPress ("Quark") is a computer application for creating and editing complex page layouts in a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) environment. It runs on Mac OS X and Windows. It was first released by Quark, Inc. in 1987 and is still owned and published by the
QuarkXPress is used by individual designers and large publishing houses to produce a variety of layouts, from single-page flyers to the multi-media projects required for magazines, newspapers, catalogs, and the like.
Along with Adobe InDesign, it dominates that market space.

Many thanks for Passport 5. I don't think it brings anything new to the table over regular 5.0, but it is helpful to the max for other international users.
Passport and 'plain' version files added included some 'help' files.

Hi tmm. If the DL above hasn't changed in a couple of years then there are no limitations (apart from lack of dictionaries other than US English) and it'll work fine for you.
The only ugly bit I recall is the promotional splash screen before the program loads, otherwise its just a standard copy of QXP 5.
I don't use Quark very much, but when I do, I still prefer to use version 3.32r5 over these later versions.
Do you know what the limitations are with this promotional copy?
PS. Will it work with International English (AUS)?
I have the FULL unadulterated FREE PC version of 5.5 that they were offering from a cover disc, if anyone is interested?!

There are "install floppy virginizers" out there for Mac Quark 3.3, 4.0 and I believe 5.0.
I'll look through my backups tonight...
PS. I only ever had the 68k version of 3.3, I got the 4.0 for Power Macintosh on my version 4.0 tho. I remember some 68k-only plug-ins not working on PPC version of Quark.
My cover disc Windows version was Quark XPress 5.5 (the original English only version).

I don't know when the 1st native PPC version of Quark was released, but I did buy on ebay about six months ago a complete boxed set of Quark Express version 3.31 for Power Macintosh. I know Quark was into distributing either 68k or PPC versions separately with their version 3 series. My ebay purchase consisted of the original packaging, 3 manuals, the installation CD for PPC and the user Registration floppy disk. A small downside for me was the user registration floppy had been written to. I could still install QXP but it was already pre-registered to whoever had originally purchased the set. Very usable, tho' I'd like to "virginize" that floppy somehow.
I myself used Quark XPress 3.3r5 for a staggering amount of time - right up until Quark 6.0 was coming out, we were still using 3.3.
My backup version is 4.0i, which is an upgraded 3.3 with Magpie, and some other 3rd party and free extensions (such as Pasteboard). From memory, I believe that 4.0 was the first PPC native version - I may well be wrong there...
InDesign did not take over from XPress until they introduced instant real drop-shadows and transparency in version 1.5. Version 2.0 was easily the best, but crashed with anything more complex than a simple one colour table. The high-res WYSIWYG screen preview and crash recovery features also help put the last nail in the Quark XPress coffin (which didn't have live preview, without clunky extensions all through until at least 6.

Thanks for the tip. Its basically the same menu here in Seamonkey, located under the View menu. I will only need to turn off the styles when sending up files and pix because the pages look so awful without styles turned on
The best thing for me is I now don't have to boot up a Mac into OS 9 just to send up a jpeg! Thanks again.
Ooohh. PageMaker (the predecesor to InDesign) was dead in the water in the whole of the 90's against the vastly superior XPress v3.3 (which I still have). And I mean XPress was an industry standard, v4 came along in 1996 and then Quark threw it all away and I mean REALLY handed the the DTP market to Adobe. Everyone waited 6 years for the release of v5 and, after Steve Jobs had pronounced OS9 dead, released this version, for OS9 only.
I remember reading the industry press at the time, the reviewers were writing "WTF ??", the users were writing in with"WTF ??". You need to remember that this cost many thousands of pounds, more than the top end Mac fully loaded with RAM, disks, 23 inch display, etc. So who was going to invest all that money on software when in 3 months you wouldn't be able to buy a computer that could run it.
Adobe made things worse by bundling Photoshop, Illustrator,Acrobat, etc, etc, with InDesign, for half the price.
We'll never understand why Quark did that.
TataMisia, no I do not have the full installer version. The dictionaries are from an installed license owned by someone else who did not agree to upload his entire license. I myself did never and will never use Quark because I do need first rate typography something old Quark versions never offered. Regarding typography classic Quark has never really been able to compete with PageMaker, not to mention with InDesign or TeX.
It's ->View ->Style ->No Style in Internet Explorer, which I must sadly use most of the time. Sometimes the edit page works okay without changing anything, sometimes not. I'm sure it's partly to do with all the various display settings that change from one computer to the next. Font size, magnification, etc.

But ironically, for me, for the last two weeks Firefox has been better than ever with the default "Basic Page Style". (Firefox v2.0.0.20 under OSX 10.3.9.

Mike Garden, when the edit page isn't formatted properly in your browser, go through your menus and find and select "no style" for viewing, instead of "default." The page becomes perfectly functional then.

If you have full Passport version and you want upload, just do it.
Surprisingly, they (Quark) released version 5 (PC non-passport version) for free on a coverdisc. I still have the installer and serial# backed up. If anyone is interested - leave a pm request.
xy, close. what I mean is that if we had the full Passport version, it would be a multi-language version (at least in all the languages XPress supported).
As TataMisia has already said, it's an ISO he found on the Web, so no guarantees that it does include everything.
Leave your contribution up until someone confirms the full download does contain the multi-language packs. It's heart-breaking to have to remove one of your own uploads after all the effort you've put in. It would be even more devastating to remove it and then find it was still needed.
Euryale, TataMisia's upload should definitely not be removed, since this is actual application. My upload does not contain the application but merely non English spelling and hyphenation dictionaries.
bertyboy, so what you say is that the installer contains foreign language dictionaries? Then, if nobody vetos, I will remove my upload because it is unecessary. I will wait till tomorrow for vetos, and then remove.
Why not instead of removing one of the uploads,
keep both links with their repective description as to what the differences are,
thus, no vandalizing is done..
Not wanting to stir things up, but the advertising blurb for QuarkXPress Passport editions do clearly state that it is a multi-language edition.
This is an infamous version:
in the PC world, the full version was given away as a cover disc on a Windows PC magazine.
in the Mac world, as in it's 2002 release it was still OS9 only.
TataMisia, since your upload is a promotional version, it is very well possible that - for license reasons - it does not contain other dictionaries than the U.S. one. This might sound awkward, since this is the Passport version. However, the Passport version, first of all, means that one can install it on all other language Mac OS systems than the U.S. one. It does not necessarily mean that all spelling and hyphenation dictionaries are included, simply because this would have been to expensive for Quark.
The same is true for RagTime 5 Solo and Privat, for instance, which do not have any dictionaries at all, exactly because RagTime was not willing to pay the publishing houses, who provided the content of the dictionaries, any license fees.
Maybe someone here has installed this app and can tell whether the installer offers the international dictionaries. If nobody is interested or someone says that the installer does have all international dictionaries, I will remove my upload.
Of course, TataMisia, you are free to remove my upload any time, since this is your thread.

TataMisia, please check: I opened your zip-Archive and found just the U.S. spelling and hyphenation dictionary. However, I did not install the app, because I did not want to. Therefore, I do not know, does the installer offer the possibility to install also Dutch, German, Swedish, etc. spelling and hyphenation dictionaries? If yes, you can remove my upload (or I will do it). If not, the upload provides exactly those dictionaries which might be useful for non English type setters.

The 4.22 MB sit-archive is NOT the application; it merely contains international dictionaries which I have added since this version seems to have U.S. dictionaries only. sit-Archive was made with StuffitDeluxe 5.5. If it does not work please tell me; I will make another archive.

The long installer code does not work for me. Have tried installing on SheepShaver and actual G4 running Mac OS 9.2.2, both fail with same error message.
