Hope you like my newest upload!! It includes all required software, including the CD (in iso format), Drivers Disk and Installation Disk. I have also attached an installation guide from Insanely Mac on how to Install it in Bochs, and I got it to run using the same sort of method in VirtualBox (although unlike in Bochs, in VirtualBox it was in Black and White.)
As a request, could someone find the PPC version? I would like to try the primitive version of Classic that was included in it.
To rejoin files that have been split, use either 7-Zip or HJSplit for Windows, Split&Concat for Mac OS X, or ChunkJoiner for Classic Mac.

Rhapsody was the code name given to Apple Computer's next-generation operating system during the period of its development between Apple's purchase of NeXT in late 1996 and the announcement of Mac OS X in 1998. It consisted primarily of the OPENSTEP operating system ported to the PowerMac along with new graphics in the GUI to make it appear more Mac-like. Several existing Mac OS technologies were also ported to Rhapsody, including QuickTime and AppleSearch.

Comments
I tried installing Rhapsody DR2 for x86 in a Windows emulator called VirtualBox, but it didn't work. In the middle of booting Rhapsody from the hard disk for the final installation, it came up with a Mach Operating System window, and at the bottom of that window, it said, "panic: kdp_poll: no debugger device." Does anyone have any ideas as to how to counteract that?
@Copland Dev:
The ones that weren't labeled as "x86." I've added "PPC" to the filenames to make them easier to spot.
Which one is the PPC version???
@24Bit: No problem!
Yeah, SheepShaver does not emulate actual SCSI or IDE drives. Which the installer requires. (Plus actual OpenFirmware.) I have a Beige G3 that I'm going to try it out on. I just haven't burned the disc yet.
@Protocol 7: If I wanted I could go further and use ResEdit to restore the "date created & date modified" on the Desktop DB & DF files. But yeah it still wouldn't be "original."
24bit: This won't install on an emulator. You need a compatible Mac (see the PPC link to rhapsodyos.org under Compatibility)
You only boot into Mac OS to prepare the destination partition and OF boot. The actual setup is all done from the hidden Rhapsody session.
PowerPup: Fixing the desktop database error in Sheepshaver should work fine. That's how I fixed my copy. The hunt goes on for a good copy of this, but finding someone with an original CD to rip is mission impossible
@PowerPup
Thanks for fixing the image! I can boot SheepShaver with the read only image, but the installer does not seem to see my SS-drives at all. Did you manage to install DR2? If so, what is your host configuration?
I remember I had fun installing this OS,}
only thing is that it was only in greys
Aw man, what a bummer. We'll, since it was already modified I decided to go ahead and try to repair it.
(Replaced the broken DR2 with the repaired one.)
I have not tried it yet on my PowerMacintosh G3. But hopefully it will work fine.
(If it works fine I'll move it with the others.)
I used Mac OS 8.1 in SheepShaver to rebuild the desktop file on the PPC DR2 image. I can boot it fine without the error now in SheepShaver.
Unfortunately the DR2 PPC image has been modified, and is therefore useless (as it will show "cannot rebuild desktop file, disk is locked" when booted and will reboot after that)
Thanks to winworldpc.com's collection of abandonware operating systems, we now have Rhapsody DR1 & DR2 for BOTH PPC & Intel!
Enjoy!
never mind. Found it. I'll mirror it once i get it downloaded
Can someone mirror this? I have looked EVERYWHERE for it and this appears to be the only copy on the web. Thanks
.
EDIT: Found a copy on TPB but there trackers are down!
Thanks. Now, does anyone here have Yellow Box for Windows?
JLIT99: "Do you also know if there was ever a X Server (like x11.app) for Rhapsody?"
Not from Apple... There was Xnext and maX, but I've never installed either on my systems (maX was PowerPC only).
Xnext can be found here:
ftp://next-ftp.peak.org/pub/next-ftp/openstep/rhapsody/rhapsody/X-Interf...
maX can be found here:
http://members.fortunecity.com/maxinfo/index.html
Additional Info,
as I was cleaning my Garage today,
I found this very old Acer PC with an unknown CYRIX x386 66mhz Processor and 24Mb RAM
so out of curiosity, I thought about installing Rhapsody on that PC,
and guess what... it worked!
and it works great, still pretty fast, what a great OS.
(just wanted to share that)
Thanks for the info, Racer X. Do you also know if there was ever a X Server (like x11.app) for Rhapsody? There was one in A/UX. That would be great, because then it would be possible to get past the limited amount of ported apps!
More News...
As I mentioned before,
I made a UNIX-ISO image (in Windows XP environment) and put the Applications I downloaded
from your WebSite, then I burned it onto a CD, and it worked!
that's all.
Thanks!,
My CD Drive Works fine, and I've figured it out almost everything
I just Installed the OmniWeb and PDF viewer packages using the Terminal,
At first, it wouldn't let me because I was not logged in as an Administrator,
(I didn't know that after I figured it out thanks to the Frozen Screen problem and restauring
to the default Display drivers)
..and after several attempts with the " Installer.sh" command,
I finally got it!
But I cannot connect to any Network or FTP because My PC doesn't have a Network card,
so i would appreciate if you could recommend me one NIC that works with Rhapsody,
so I'll buy one.
in the meantime I will make a UNIX ISO CD image with the programs I downloaded yesterday,
and burn it onto a CD to transfer the files to rhapsody,
I'm sure that it'll work
once again, Thanks for the Info and tips.
a) I don't know anything about Windows, haven't touched Microsoft stuff in more than 8 years. But why not use an FTP client to connect to Rhapsody? It was what Apple recommended to developers. Otherwise I burned most of my Rhapsody apps to CDs back 11 years ago, and they have always worked for me.
b) I've never tried. It is a drag-n-drop environment, so navigate to the files you need in the WorkSpace Manager and move them to a folder in your home directory. Install them from there. And even the terminal is drag-n-drop, so type in "installer.sh " and then drag the package onto the terminal window (which will produce the exact address of the package) and hit return.
c) Looks like you figured that out... but I have a set of FAQs and put together a package of technical articles on Rhapsody called RhapsodyAnswers that are designed to offer help to those new to Rhapsody.
d) Once logged in under default mode, the driver settings are set in Configure.app.
Euryale: "Now would you please tell me, what should I write from here, to install
the OmniFrameworks and other apps from the CD?"
Navigate with the WorkSpace Manager to the correct folder on the CD. If you can't get there by simple navigation, then getting there any other way will be even harder. Start by double clicking the CD icon on the desktop. If there isn't a CD icon on the desktop, then that may be the heart of your problems (as your system may not be recognizing the CD drive).
This isn't really the best place for this type of stuff... there is a Rhapsody section of the forums at nextcomputers.org, that would be a better place for a back-n-forth dialog.
Nice to know, http://www.rhapsodyos.org is yous site!,
yesterday I was going through the pages there..
i don't have a problem with command line installer,
it's just that I don't know what to write,
also yesterday I downloaded the tiny Installer,
I just have to figure out how to transfer it onto the Rhapsody OS
So i just need to know 4 basic things
a) how to transfer programs from my Windows XP onto rhapsody OS
b) how to install programs from a CD using the command line
c) how to boot in "safe" mode
d) how to Uninstall drivers from the Boot up screen,
because I moved something (drivers) last time
and now it boots in color, but it gets stuck on a yellow Logo
If I have to reinstall the System again, I'll do it,
it doesn't take more than 20 minutes to do so,
I'm a very curious, and stubborn Girl and I'd like to get this thing working.
=============================
Ok, I've solved the Freeze boot up problem,
at Boot I wrote config=Default
and it booted up normal (greys) but functional,
now I have the username "compaq"
and I go into LOCAL-SYSTEM-ADMINISTRATION-TERMINAL .APP
I open the Terminal.app and it shows me this:
Localhost>
Now would you please tell me, what should I write from here, to install
the OmniFrameworks and other apps from the CD?
HELP!!
Maybe I should have been clearer... www.rhapsodyos.org is my web site.
And if you don't like the command line installer, there is an installer application (TinyInstaller) for DR2 that will work. But for OmniWeb to work at all, you have to install the OmniFrameworks first.
I'm not much of a database person, so it wasn't high on my list of apps to collect to make Rhapsody useful for me as a daily OS. I guess if I really needed something I have FileMaker Pro installed in Blue Box on my system, but I rarely turn to Blue Box for anything.
Thanks for the Info,
I was browsing the Installer CD and yes, I found the OmniWeb packages,
I tried to install them but I couldn't because of my limited knowledge of commands,
so I looked for some Info and I came across this Site:
http://www.smallersystems.com/blogs/mar/2007/06/09/rhapsody-dr2/
and this:
http://www.rhapsodyos.org/home.html
I tried the installer.sh /RhapsodyDR2/Omni/OmniWeb.pkg. command
in different ways with no success so far, it says it doesn't exist,
( i try to install it from the CD)
so I need more info on commands, change directories, etc..
So tonight I'll keep trying...
As far as what Apps I look for, that would be mainly Word Processors, DataBase, Browser,
and PDF viewers
cuz I'm a DataBase Freak, Since I like to keep all my Stuff and documents in order and cataloged.
That's all.
Firstly, Rhapsody isn't considered abandonware by Apple. This wasn't provided to the public, was never intended for the public, and was never abandon after having been supported for the public.
With that having been said, I'll offer limited information on this topic.
Euryale: "it's weird that its System documentation comes in HTML formated files and PDF's
but it doesn't include any browser or PDF readers."
Rhapsody came with both OmniWeb and OmniPDF on the installation media for reading HTML and PDF files. Additionally, TextEdit can display simple HTML files like the ones included within the documentation. The version of OmniWeb included is an expiring Beta, but the final version of OmniWeb 3.0 was made to be compatible with the Intel version of Rhapsody (and is still available somewhere on the Omni Group's web site).
Euryale: "I just wish there was an Office-like App, that would make it really useful."
What are you looking for in the way of applications?
I use TextEdit in Mac OS X for my basic word processing. If I need more than what it provides I'm moving up to doing page layout and I do that in Stone Design's Create. In Rhapsody I also use TextEdit for my basic word processing. If I need more than what it provides I'm moving up to doing page layout and I do that in Stone Design's Create for Rhapsody.
Create does page layout, web page/site building and vector based illustration work. It is really a sort of 'swiss army knife' application, and Stone Design still sells license codes for Create 5.x which works nicely in Rhapsody on Intel based systems. The complete Create 5 manual is on my web site (which was made using Create in Rhapsody).
If you need a spreadsheet application, Mesa3 works nicely for that. If you want to view PDFs, there is OmniPDF, but PDFView is a much better application (and includes far more features).
There is a dedicated word processor application called WriteUp and a dedicated page layout application called PasteUp for Rhapsody, but the developer is unwilling to sell license codes for them any more (though the apps still work in demo mode).
Thanks again!,
right after I installed it, I started looking for info on that System
and came across that site you mention and downloaded several programs,
now I have to figure out how to transfer them on a CD that Rhapsody will read,
I have the Ultra ISO program and I think it can format and burn Unix CD's
I really liked Rhapsody cuz is very fast and responsive
(It feels like Mac OS 8 )
it's weird that its System documentation comes in HTML formated files and PDF's
but it doesn't include any browser or PDF readers.
I'll keep tinkering with it.
I just wish there was an Office-like App, that would make it really useful.
I'm glad to know it was of some use to you. I think that the discs and floppies have to be UFS-formatted (Unix File System). I think you can do this in Linux and Disk Utility in Mac OS X.
BTW, the only available web browser for Rhapsody, OmniWeb, requires a date before 1996. Otherwise it won't load.
I hope that you manage to get it working fully

This site has some useful info on setting up with Rhapsody: http://www.rhapsodyos.org/home.html
I have some News,
I just Installed Rhapsody OS succesfully in my old Compaq Presario,
it took me some guessing to figure out the beginning but after that,
everything went smooth,
except that I still have to figure out the drivers for the Display because it's still Grays (B/W),
also I'm really surprised, it's actually pretty fast.
BTW, My Compaq has an AMD K6 350Mhz processor with only 28Mb RAM
--
It doesn't recognize neither Mac or Win formats, when I insert any CD with that format,
it seems like it tastes them, doesn't like them and then spits them out automatically,
That is kind of funny.
There are 3 files, one is the ISO's OS,
but there are 2 with the suffix ".fs"
which are "InstallationDisk.fs" and "DeviceDriversDisk.fs"
they seemed to be the installation floppy images,
my question is,
How do you handle the .fs files?
--
Nevermind, I just discovered RawWrite
Thanks!
Now, I hope it doesn't give me too much trouble.
Well, like everything else on this website it's abandonware. Like nk6 said, it could be in black and white, but the colour drivers may work. You would also have to know all the specific hardware because the installer asks you everything, down to what CD-ROM driver to use (DVD drives aren't supported.)
I haven't installed it on real hardware, just virtual machines. If you have any success with it please let me know.
Yes I have an old Pentium.
If you want to try this you'll need an old Pentium I or bochs, it doesn't work on any other pc emulator, and even this way it runs awfully slow and in black and white.
