Excerpt from Corel Ventura at Wikipedia:
Ventura Publisher was the first popular desktop publishing package for IBM PC compatible computers running the GEM extension to the DOS operating system. The software was originally developed by Ventura Software, a small software company founded by John Meyer, Don Heiskel and Lee Jay Lorenzen, all of whom met while working at Digital Research. It ran under an included run-time copy of Digital Research, Inc.'s Graphical Environment Manager (GEM).
The first version of Ventura Publisher was released in 1986.
Ventura Publisher was distributed worldwide exclusively by Xerox from its first shipment in 1986 until Ventura Software sold the source code to Xerox in 1990. The original Ventura Software ceased operations in February 1990, and a new Ventura Software Inc., an affiliated company of Xerox, was formed at that time. The developers from the original company worked with the new Xerox Ventura Software company to produce Version 3.0 Gold. This was released in late 1990. Besides DOS/GEM it was also available for Win16, Mac and OS/2.

Thanks very much, the "quick_reference.pdf" now works in Acrobat 4 & newer. It looks just great too, you've done an excellent job with the scan.
[Edit] And the Read Me file "vp3_read_me.pdf" also looks great, thanks.
I had optimized my raw scans to get the page size right, and also get the big document under 40MB. That optimization used JPEG2000, which is what caused the problem. The new uploads are confirmed working on Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0.
Thanks for confirming. Just noting again:
I'm getting that with Acrobat Reader 5.0 on the Mac, but newer (current) PDF readers don't have a problem with it. I'll see if I can somehow use a more compatible format, but I'm sort of stuck with what editor I use (Foxit Phantom).
I'm getting this error message with both PDF's; "There was an error processing a page. There was an error while trying to parse an image". On every page I try to access in these documents and no content is visible. Mac & PC Adobe Acrobat 4 & 5. This is with "quick_reference_guide.pdf" and "release_notes_0.pdf"
They're both PDF version 1.3 (Acrobat 4.x) files, so should be able to open OK using Acrobat 4 or later. - They open OK for me using SumatraPDF reader on a PC. Maybe later versions of Acrobat will be OK too?
The pdf "ventura-publisher-release_notes.pdf" posted to here earlier (but no longer available) opens & works fine in Acrobat 4 & 5. I assume that this and "release_notes_0.pdf" were the same document (reprocessed & renamed). The earlier now unavailable document is 4 MB in file size, the current uploaded "release_notes_0.pdf" are 1 MB in size, if it has any bearing.
Many thanks for archiving this very rare historical software for the future !
Just looking at the floppies screenshot is a delicious sight...
I accidentally titled the software Ventura Publishing 3.0 at first. I corrected the title, but the node has already been created.
Why is the app page titled Ventura Publishing?
I would fix it, but don't want to risk it with this GLORIOUSLY RARE software!
Great Job.
Thank you for archiving this very rare DTP software. The very first WYSIWYG software I ever saw running on a computer was the DOS/GEM version of Ventura Publisher. It was at the time way too complicated for me to use. I think that if I had known about Mac's at the time and saw it running on that I would've probably been hooked and in love at first sight. I found the DOS/GEM version far too daunting at the time.
