"Powerful but minimal word processor."
"WriteNow was originally written for Apple Computer because Steve Jobs feared MacWrite would not be ready to be released with the Macintosh in 1984. Of course, MacWrite was completed on time. It is unclear as to how WriteNow made its way to NeXT, Inc. with Steve Jobs, but it was eventually released by NeXT as a commercial product. Additionally, it was ported to NEXTSTEP and bundled with the NeXTstation until the early 1990s.
WriteNow was transferred over to T/Maker, the publisher of WriteNow, after NeXT began worrying third-party developers, like WordPerfect, would have issues with a free word processor being distributed with the NeXT machines. Therefore, version 3.0 of WriteNow was no longer bundled and was released under T/Maker. To mask the origins further, WordStar purchased the rights to WriteNow, most likely in 1992. Thus, version 4.0 was released by WordStar.
The end of WriteNow came with the purchase of WordStar by The Learning Company in 1994. Apparently, WriteNow was written in 68K assembly, making it fast running but difficult to port. This is just an assumption, but is possible The Learning Company ended WriteNow because they did not want to deal with porting it to the newly released PowerPC machines Apple released. Even though the PowerPC machines could run 68K coded programs, the end of the 68K-based machines was in sight. Porting the code would eventually be necessary." --www.oldermacs.com

I had this back when I was using my Mac Plus in college. Very nice and more powerful word processor than the original MacWrite for any 68K Macintosh.
Uploaded with different filename; seems to work now.
That happened to me with early versions of StuffIt. I think they finally got it right after version 3.5. Still, DropStuff have always had the option to encode the sit file into binhex when encoding. It's strange it doesn't have an option to do the same with MacBinary. Must be a licensing issue.
So the file is hosed. Just reupload it with one extension and no underscores.
If you go to the "Edit this page" and right-click on the filename and "save as" you can see it's got a "0" in the filename, and sure looks to me like two underscores together, though I could be wrong about that. Remember at some point something happened with this page and somebody re-upped the archive, which could have resulted in some weird automatic naming thing.
Supposedly the StuffIt format is already a binary, and yet I've had quite a few downloaded archives messed up and unusable over the years, yet I've never downloaded something with a .bin extension that was broken. So I always .bin it after stuffing. Expander 5.5 only takes a couple seconds extra to open it. And no, I can't be talked out of doing it. And I've uploaded many other archives that had double extensions and no problem.
No, it only has one. My guess is that the server have issues with double extensions rather than with underscores. Can you removed the .sit extension (so the server don't add the underscore) and reupload the file from your backup? That might do the trick.
By the way, is there a reason to encode a sit file in MacBinary?
Could it be that the filename has too many underscores in it? That seems to have been a problem in some other cases.
hi! Looks like the download link is giving that error about a key again?
Nope. I'm still not getting a link through to the download. When I click, I get this:
NoSuchKeyThe specified key does not exist.WriteNow.sit_.bin230C0B1055114CF6VZh8L/X8EjZdVXtCC9z4wDTU5p5++QrVeqpL+TqjX7Wk9FAPkyJVAwarqizFr7ac
It's more than just the edit page that Internet Explorer messes up! IE sucks, though. I don't use it unless I'm forced to, which I'm sure is just how Bill Gates likes it.
The revisions are permanent, we have to see if they balloon the size of the database or not. But we will keep as many revisions for as long as possible. Glad you found the feature, it is cool eh!? Interesting to know that IE has adverse affects when editing a game, I'm not sure why...
Wow, that's cool that the older revisions can be accessed. I didn't even realize that! Are they permanent or will they eventually be wiped?
Weird is right. I definitely did not click "remove" on the app file when I uploaded the screenshot last night. I was able to get the old file from "Revisions" - it's back up now. Sorry (?) everyone, looks like if it's anyone's fault it's mine
That's weird...people are going to have to be careful when editing these pages. I use public access computers (Windows) and several different browsers, and none of them are perfect with this site. Internet Explorer (any version) butchers everything, and Firefox seems to handle the editing page best only when "no style" is selected. Anyway I'll re-upload my file tomorrow after I've gone home to retrieve it. It includes versions 1, 2, 3, and 4.
Don't know what happened to the file that was here last night… I just posted the full v4 collection: app, dictionary, thesaurus, conversion filters (macwrite, word, works, rtf, perfect, pagemaker, and quark), and mailing label templates
If anyone has v.s1-3 it'd be nice to have them here. 1 & 2 are only of historical interest, but I remember that when 4 came out I continued using 3 for years and years (don't remember why, but for some reason it was better - at least on my computers at the time)
@Anonymous
There should be a 'Download' link. The uploader, hasn't uploaded the app itself, or something's wrong...
I am confused. How do I download this software?
My WriteNow documents are unusable, so I need this download. I hope it works.
