As I´ve written before here I´m with you MadMac. A simple response to the original mail with a request of confirming sender's identity and then see what´s returned. That should be the starting point for actions from our/MG's side.

She is definitely legitimate. Here she is in conversation with other EA representatives about their anti-BitTorrent strategy. (Scroll down to the bottom.)

Nope. I won´t look her up. I´m more interested in where the mail came from originally than the name in the message at the bottom. Wink

So i emailed the email address listed in the message and i have got no reply(i emailed when this topic was started). I've emailed EA's Legal Department and they sent me this message:

Thank you for contacting Electronic Arts. The copy...@ea.com e-mail address is only for inquiries about the removal of allegedly infringing content from EA’s websites and online services. Unrelated messages will be deleted and no response will be sent.
Please use one of the websites or e-mail addresses listed below for other inquiries.
Thank you,
Electronic Arts Inc.
Permission Requests
Requests for permission to use EA materials should be directed to perm...@ea.com.
Piracy
To report piracy of EA games, contact pir...@ea.com.

i think we should try the 3rd email address (Permission Requests).
EDIT:Emailed EAs Permission Request and we'll see what they say Smile .

If I was able to see the full original email with headers, I probably could determine whether or not it's valid.

We should have verified before asking permission.

- nmz502 is right, balrog. we need somebody responsible for this site to write there and get some response... of any kind.

You guys, jeez. Why not just wave a red flag in front of the bull while you're at it? Seriously, who the hell would make up something like that anyway?

We should just forget about it, re-upload everything, and bring up evidence of possible fraud if ever taken to court.

@MCP, a troll, remember "Drew hause"? All he/she would have to do is google EA enforcement, send an email to our site and tell us to take down all the games.
Why? Because we closed his spammer account.

I don't know. Just a guess.

Let's say it's a fake. It's not, but let's say it is. So, the response to it is to draw EA's attention to the site? Bad idea. Let sleeping dogs lie.

First off, as far as attracting EA's attention by asking permission and getting them mad, they would get mad or do what exactly? All the content has been removed! Geez folks, grow a pair and ask for distribution rights! I have asked for rights to post all kinds of older content from several companies, and after reaching the right person (usually someone with marketing) and explaining that I would be happy to include what ever advertising blurb they saw fit to draw up in file that outlines the grant of distribution rights such that said blurb get people to visit their site where they sell stuff, in exchange for giving them something that they are now making no money off anyway, I have met with success more than once. It is free advertising and free positive publicity for the company! IF the email was legitimate (and I say if), it was probably sent by one person, from one department, without any real discussion with upper management. Even upper management was aware and endorsed the decision, it could be reversed if other considerations are brought to their attention. EA has a ton of bad press, this could give them good PR and would cost them nothing. Who is the site owner? (Owns the domain, pays the bills, etc?) They should make the request.

Here is an example where someone else got permission to distribute copyrighted material: http://www.harmlesslion.com/cgi-bin/showprog.cgi?search=Classic99
Classic99 is a freeware TI-99/4A emulator for Windows 9x. Classic99 runs most stuff fine:

-System ROMs and many cartridges are INCLUDED under license from Texas Instruments
-boots and runs all console OS functions (except cassette I/O) and TI BASIC correctly
-most modules seem to work fine

Read up a bit on how EA (and most other companies) does stuff. Legal departments usually aren't very permissive.

Put Klik & Play back up, because it was never owned by Maxis or Electronic Arts.

Sierra published Ultima II for Origin, does that make Activision Blizzard owner of the Ultima series? Nope. EA owns it.

I think this is a bit sad about software preservation... OK, for the SiMS I would understand, this one is still worked on, at least on the successors, but SimCity &c.? We'll see in 6 years...

Is this a reason why EA asked us to remove their stuff?:
http://www.superlevel.de/spiele/die-nacht-des-meteors-night-of-the-meteor
The comments on that site reads this:

Presentation and Gags of this teaser let us hope about big things. The developers seems to know what they do. Are they allowed to collect money or is collecting money not allowed because of copyright things?

They're even not allowed to use the characters, the setting or the music – anyway, INEEDTHISGAMEIMMEDIATELYNOW!

Anybody know where I CAN find a copy of the original SimCity. I've read all this stuff about EA and understand the issues, but does anyone know of anywhere else I can obtain this game? (If you don't want to communicate over the forum feel free to email me at cambrianexplosion at hotmail.com.)

How about compilation downloads?

Download packs with multiple, EA and non-EA games aswell, filenames are just abbreviations, and such.

Or like in Commodore 64 compilation disks, multiple games on one disk image?

Ignore it, it was an Illegal stop and desist notice in the first place. Karen Jessop is a US paralegal which means that since this letter came from a US Paralegal, the notice falls under US jurisdiction no matter where the server and website is located. In 2006, the US Librarian of Congress enacted a few clauses that make Archivng software for non-infringing purposes and distribution freely available to the public as long as A) The hardware these unsupported software versions run on are obsolete and no longer updated, B) the media that these titles come on are obsolete.

Typical EA nonsense... Concerned with profit and profit only. It's not like they even sell these games now...

Okay, I know this is an old thread and there's all sorts of legalities being thrown around, but I wonder if somebody would be so kind as to share their copy of Sim Farm with me?

When I was a much younger person, my older brother and I bought Sim Farm at the store. Sadly, over the years and different computers, my version has become corrupted. Sad The game crashes and the irrigation ditches don't work any more. I still have the floppy disks they came on, but no way to read them (and heck, who knows if they even hold data now. I can provide photographic proof of this on request.

I really miss playing it...

I sent an email to EA, but you can guess how many ____s they gave. No response.

If I'd upload something of Abandonware owned (or now owned) by EA and get a reaction, I'd respond with:

"We know you're taking offense by Abandonware, but you don't sell these good old games anymore. I also know that every time you release a new game, it only becomes much less appealing and more irritating to the customers because of your ridiculous DRM (Internet connection), wasted cash on advertising, and held-back content through DLCs. If you're telling me to wipe away your old classic games from Macintosh Garden just so you can ensure your later games are bought so that you can continue to be hurtful, piss off!
I'd rather please my fellows than worship you. You greedy sons of bitches also rush your games out and use DLCs just because you think money is a thousand times more important than happy customers. MAKE me take away your games from the Macintosh Garden, because I think you want money just to exist. I bet your founder, Trip Hawkins, is definitely dissapointed with you right now"

How about placing some EA banners in trade for making the abandonware of EA freely available...

This is a site for the purest software lovers, so the impact of software commercials is absolutely the highest over here...

Using abandonware for marketing purposes in selling their newest software is like selling icecream on a hot summerday to icecreamlovers. I think it would be a very efficient marketing tactic that could save EA quite some budget, and saving budget is something every company wants to hear. This is their icecream...

Besides that, it could also boost up the capacity of the site allowing more games to be fully downloadable from the site itself.

It is just a thought. What are your opinions???
