Careful with that screwdriver!
Did you create a System 6 HFS boot disk with your PowerMac?
A SSW 7 System Tools should work too for booting.
You should use DiskCopy to write a clean image to a Mac formatted floppy. There are images available on the net. http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates...
Anything from 6.0.4 on should boot your IIci.

Edit: Replaced 'xxx7' with 'SSW 7' - IIGS User

Think the first disk here (http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates...) would work? Hadn't even noticed the link to that in your post

Edit (I make a lot of edits, don't I): In making a startup disk with Norton, it asked me which model I wanted, and Mac IIci was in the list. Not a surprise, but I'm just pointing out that this should hopefully work. : |

Edit 2: Didn't work, same thing as before...

If what 24bit suggested does not work before looking at the floppy drive itself try a couple of different floppy disks...I remember at one time where I had a couple of floppies that would spit back out..They were the same capacity but different manufactures...I think there was 3 that I tried and the 3rd one worked for some reason...Even after format and putting the same exact files on them...

That's probably what's been happening. I've been trying several disks, and this last one worked. Then after this one worked, I saw your reply. Smile

I grabbed the first disk (6.0.3), and installed it to a floppy, and I got this message after the happy mac: "This startup disk was created with a "Minimum" installer script and will not work on this model Macintosh. Use a standard installer script to update the disk for different models." I told it to install for the Macintosh II family. More experimentation needed!

In my listing, the first disk is 6.0.3 = no good. Try the first of of the 6.0.8 1.4 MB images, System Startup (Disk 1 of 2). Expand the file on your PowerMac and write the image to disk with DC4.2 if you can. Try the target floppy first, if it formats all right as HFS. You may need 7.5 to use DC4.2. If you cant use 4.2, DC6 or DiskDup+ should do too. If your floppy looks all right on the PPC and still doesnt boot the MacII, try cleaning the floppy heads.

Ran the installer for 6.0.8 from my Power Mac and told it specifically to install for the IIci, and it actually booted to that! Only problem now is I might need another disk. It came up > Welcome to Macintosh > Top bar appeared > Message saying this: "The disk "System 6.0.8 Macintosh IIci" needs minor repairs. Do you want to repair it?" Now to click OK and see what happens...

... it worked. Listening to the floppy drive in this thing makes me laugh whenever it pauses to load something. And this card is good! It can display millions of colors instead of just 256 (albeit with quite a lot of lag, but that's not important)

Edit #: There's 20,480KB of RAM in this thing... I have no idea whether that's decent amount of RAM or not.

That is pretty good...Can be maxed at 128meg...

Glad to hear you made it work!
If someone would donate a small SCSI HDD you should be fine with 7.5 on that.
I gave away my spare HDDs ages ago, but someone else might help you. I did keep external Syquest 40 MB cartridge drives with 220V psu. If you want one of them for shipping costs, let me know. The Syquests can be used for booting, but they are a bit slow - better than nothing maybe.

I have a whole lot of ide drives that would be great if this was a beige g3...I'll have to look and see what else I have...I know that I do have some but those are either in machines already or have the click of death last time I used them.....
Funny you mention that 24bit..I used to use a zip drive and loaded a system on that...:Evil

Once you get that system up and running with 7.5 that video lag should be corrected with that OS...

Hey radius, never had such modern stuff like ZIP. Smile The SQ555 were with most of my computers back in the day: MacII, Amiga 2000, Windows and even MS-DOS. Sneakernet home to office and back, that was. 40MB was perfect at that time. Although the Syquests became obsolete, I could not dump them, as they are still working fine.

hehe...Smile.....I used that zip on the radius...I floated between 8.5 and 7.5.....I did not have a large hard drive at that time so I did not want to have 2 partions......yep back in the day..;>)
I remember those...Worked at a company printing some manuals and thats what was used for storage at the time......Feel the same way...Still got some tape drives and tapes that work....

Thanks for offering the HDD, 24bit! I'll probably take you up on it at some point, though the part of me that's used to 1TB drives is wanting me to look for larger, but I'm remembering that even OS 9 took up around 400MB or so, and System 6 fit on this floppy xD. Oh how the times have changed. Is it possible to boot to an external Zip Drive with this thing? I've booted my Power Mac to 7.5.5 on a Zip before, so that seems like a slow, but possible solution I think.

Just to clarify Googie, its a removable cartridge drive in a 5.25 inch external SCSI case. I´ll have to look on the attic, whether there are three or four of them. Anyway I have stacks of used cartridges too. If you should go for Syquest, two of them on the Mac´s bus would be nice. One for booting the desired System, the other for apps and data.
Here is a screenshot with the Applications folder about 40MB. Its done from TataMisia´s image here on MG BTW.

A harddisk would be preferrable as its faster and wont clutter your desk. If you want one, go for it. These drives are becoming rare already.
Something like this should work as internal HDD: http://www.ebay.de/itm/QUANTUM-VP32210-SCSI-Hard-Disk-Drive-/27099830611...

What I'm wondering now is, how would I go about paying you for shipping?

Any thoughts about PayPal? Not that I would like that service too much, but I registered there for convenience. Where in the world are you? If you live outside the EU countries this would apply:
DHL wants US $38 for a 5kg package, $60 for 10 and $86 for 20kg. Rather much money one would think.
Seems as two drives, cables and a dozen cartridges will be about 16 kg when boxed.
One of the Syquest enclosures has a 110V power plug too. Does that look about right for your power lines? Photobucket

I live in East Coast US, and those do look like the right kind of plug for here.

If you needed to call Löwe ('Lion') in the past, peoples were running away,
with panic in their eyes, do they?

Have a look at this too: http://www.ebay.de/itm/HP-Proliant-18-2GB-SCSI-HDD-SCA-80-polig-BF01885A...
Such a server slave might live in freedom with your Mac by means of a SCA to 50pin adapter - see pics at the bottom:

Hi Googie
I have lots of stuff that you can have. I have some spare NuBus network cards and video cards. If you're interested, leave me a message in my profile.

Just in case someone might be interested in that kind of stuff, these are the read/write reports from my PPC7100:

I forgot the removeable drives were that noisy, but they seem to be useable still. Comparison may be a bit unfair, as the Syquest has its own SCSI bus. The HDDs are named after my cats, BTW.
