Now i announce something long overdue, yet another protocol!
This time KDX (Yes i know i said id do hotline, but i have had some problems with it)
the reason for this is because i wanted something that combines chat and files (like wired) but worked well with classic mac os and windows.

looks like the usb2 card has failed (which had both the main data and backup drives on it)
I can no longer keep replacing hardware at the rate it fails, really i need to build a purpous made Hackintosh (or get a intel based mac). but i can't afford that, possibley at some point i will get a sonnet tempo sata card for the g4 (thus eliminating the usb problems) but i can't afford that either

server is offline untill further notice.
im gonna replace the card in a few min
the problem runs deeper, i have the same problem with the built in ports, looks like possible disk corruption.

I was gonna move it onto my g5, but that won't boot
the quicksilver is acting up, the sawtooth i originally hosted on blew it's psu some time ago the g5 won't boot. I have no more comps sutible for use as server.

Server is now up, On the G5, seems the shed was too cold for it, now under the stairs it is running well
KDX is not up right now, it should be in a few days

i thought i did, but the g4 had the same problem there plugged into a 1500VA ups the only thing i can find is the temp the server was in the shead (hence it was pretty cold) it seems allot more stable now i have moved the server inside, Also where on my G5 now

guess what? Data drive's smart status has ticked over to faild. the disk still reads. as the price of disks has shot up recently i'm forced to keep using the disk, it's fine atm, iv had no I/O errors, the second i se a I/O error im pulling the drive (& the backup drive)
Unless someone is willing to donate one, the drive is not going to be replaced (prices are far too high atm)
anyways, server is up till i ataually see a I/O error

KDX is finally back online

Expect downtime sometime this week, data has been moved to a new raid setup (made of old disks, i have scraped about 320GB of space) installation of the new controller will be sometime this week (probably wednesday, if your in the uk you'll know why this is).
Also it's worth noting, any uploads (inc account requests) from now on will be ignored, as the data is already moved (and i don't trust any new data written to the drive) .

we are now running off the new raid array, lets hope we can hold off any more failers till the price of hdd's comes down

from the 23th to the 27th there will be freeleach for Christmas, enjoy

files are offline for now, network raid box is not connectable for a unknown reason.

Files offline, Yes i know you can see them, but a drive in the raid is "Missing" (probably failed) so allot of files are incompleat

unfortunately i seem to have a case of missing the blindingly obvious, since around november ther server has been running om my g5, which has a 250gb boot drive which has ~15gb used.
It struck me about a hour ago "why not move the data onto that drive?...."

ok liquid coolant leak, one cpu is ruined, i'm looking into possibly replacing the waterblock and running with one cpu, it all depends on cost.

It's dead, i'm looking into getting a new logicboard and processors (as replacement processers for my G5 are very hard to find) but again, it all depends on cost.

no, but the server will spend most of it's life with just power and network plugged in so it's no big problem

Please, Please, please set your ftp client to have no more than 2 simultaneous downloads, if you have more and i feel it affects our internet or other users you will get a 1 hour ban (mainly to make your client time out the transfers)

Uploads disabled for now, running out of disk space, looks like i'm gonna have to save for a 500gb disk

(i will have a dig around tho, it's just possible i have some smaller disks around i could move data too)

hrmf, seems i used the drive i thought i had free
so, i will add 40gb more storage tomorrow, but that won't be enough in the long term (or probably the short term)
new drives are expensive these days, so i may end up going second hand, but even then, i have no money to buy new drives (and i already pinched all remotely free drives in the house )

ok, added a 40gb drive and re enabled uploads

i may have also sourced a 320gb drive from a friend (for £20), but i still have no money, may i humbly ask if anyone is willing to donate a few ££'s towards getting it? (i'll post my paypal address if anyone is)

Files going offline, creating a raid with the new drive, once this is done the server data partition will go up from 250gb to just under 600gb (570gb), leaving around 300gb free

Downtime will be for around 4 - 5 hours

Ok, so i get a lot of complaints about the download speed being too slow, so one thing i have been thinking about is trying sharing more unusal / large (such as OS anth '99 and the dev cd's) files via torrent, although this is not compatible with the classic os i know allot of people here use, or have access to a modern os.
my reasoning for this is that once the hole file has been uploaded the download speed for everyone increases.
(of corse i won't stop any of the protocols i already run)

What i want to know is if i do this would people use them (i'm thinking of adding a proper frontend to the tracker i already have rather than just having a bunch of torrent files and a tracker)

because my internet isn't the fastest at the best of times, plus it has to be shared with the other three people in my family, and for the most part upgrading to a faster line would mean moving to a provider which dosen't allow freedom of use (ie will block ports + sites) so i may not even be able to run the server from those providers (plus we simply cannot afford it). For the time being there is nothing i can do about it. No one with a account on my server has ever been throttled, and i don't think i will ever need to. This is why i would like to use P2P to distribute some of my files.

So everyone, for the last time, slow speeds are caused by my slow line, there's nothing i can do about it. The server outgrew what our adsl line could really handle really fast. I can simply not afford to get a faster line or put the server in a data center.

Ok, some good news, where getting fiber, since our isp is now offering it (and we max our upstream 24/7) we are getting it. This means in a couple of weeks there will be about a day of downtime (i may also use this to do some maintiance to the server, nothing you'd notice tho) when a new line + router is installed
I do know the speed we are likely to get, i can't say that yet tho, because that isn't set in stone yet (i can say it is allot faster than what we have now- whatever package we get)

server may be a little unstable, half the sata ports on the board died (literally, they just stopped working) but that's what i get for using desktop hardware on a server. I will now either get another PowerMac G5, a high end PC board (with a i3 or i5) or a G4 / G5 xserve, although it will be a while before i can afford any of them

There will be downtime for most of the day on the 12th of july, that is when we are getting our fiber line installed.

Also, i think i will get a G4 Xserver to replace the hackintosh it runs on now, this will cost around £100, although it will still be a while before i can afford it (also, should i get a 1.33ghz dual with no hdd's or carriers, or a single 1ghz with 2x250gb hdd's?)

well, i have 3 ide drives, would cost ~£5 for each carrier (so £20 for the 1.33 dual, £10 for the single 1.0 ) a dual cpu would help (the on the fly encoding wired uses can take quite a bit of cpu power) the two 250gb ide hdd's would cost quite a bit new, not looked at the used price of them.
