Cam i ask a email to be left with account requests, just sometimes i miss them, if you don't get your account immediately id doesn't mean it has been refused, just likley i haven't seen it. If you leave a email i will always send you a confirmation email (and it lets me sort any problems, like illegal characters in usernames / passwords)

Server will be on and off for a few hours, replacing our router with a airport extreme, also gotta reconfigure our network (so the "backbone" is gigabit, rather than 100megabit)

thats shows the total bandwidth at any one point, no idea how much data was transferd in total

OK, Here is the testing FTP Server (has a 5 connection limit atm, due to the fact it is in trial mode)

The old one is a awesome piece of software, but it has one drawback (which i touched on before) if you want me to explain email me or pop on wired and i'll explain exactly what the problem is

Notice of downtime-
Expect some extended downtime (perhaps 24hours or more) this weekend, replacing the ups with a better one (which will be seen by the server, allowing auto shutdown) (picked up a free apc smart ups 1500, batts look good aswell, well i got two ups's, but one is refusing to start) old one will be moved and will power a new nas box i built and will also keep the switch up in outages (but not the modem).

Also need to sort out the backup drive (should just need to be reformatted and have the data moved back on it) for safety reasons, the server needs to be offline while i do this.

Also gotta reconfigure the network somewhat, so i got lots of work to do (most i have needed to do since moving to the xserve)

well, i used to run of pureFTPD, however it always had security flaws i couln't seem to patch up.
But saying that, i never really looked into proFTPD (but as i understand the two are related) so i'll have a look into it

ok, gonna give proftpd a shot, will be back by tommrow evening (minus HTTP) if it works ok

Anyone know of a gui frontend for proftpd? can't for the life of me find one (although i could set it up manually, i would rather not...)

Ok... Decided to just take the plunge and buy CrushFTP (just sold a couple of xbox's so had some money)

I expect migration to take a few hours, in this time the mg and mr accounts will be active, however user accounts won't be untill it is finished

Bah, ran into a bug in the software... (for some reason the software is takeing the speed limit on the mg account as for all connections on that account, and not as for each transfer, even though their customer support insists it should)

Anyway i have been thinking of a possibly better way, crushFTP will allow for self registration, so what i could do is have that, then everyone gets their own account as such (but with the same limits as the mg one) and your account gets upgraded when you upload

So if everyone is happy with that i will do that

Ok, user accounts migrated, we should be good to go.

And the public account should give you averages or around 40kb/s, as what crush dose is rather than pushing data out at a constant speed it will vary but will keep the avarage at the speed limit (it also means that ftp downloads my appear jumpy, but that is just the server keeping the avarage speed at the right rate

I will also be adding self registration, so if you have problems with the mg one you can just register your own account (which will have the same restriction as the mg one) (and if you upload your account will get upgraded)

Since the mg account still dosen't seem to be doing the speed limit right.
By signing up here you will essentially have your own speed limit (as you have your own account) therefor your speed won't be affected by others.

These accounts will have the same limits as the mg account untill you upload (at which point drop a message in the accounts db, or email me and i will upgrade your account)

Server will be offline on either saturday or sunday for a couple of hours, just for routine maintenance, gotta see if a sata card i have will work in the xserve (it's a mac flashed sil3112 based card, that my g4 quicksilver won't boot with it installed)

haven't had a chance to test it yet, will do when i have a chance to stick it in the xserve

Nah... just my parents usually want me to switch off everything before we leave, but since we are just traveling within the uk they don't have any problem with me leaving it on

ok, just cleared a 2 month backlog of self registered accounts, if you created one and it hasn't worked it should now.

i did intend to have emails sent out when the accounts have been activated but most mail services will reject the emails as they come from a residential address. looking into what it would cost to get a mail relay service, isn't looking too expensive.

Server will be down for a while in the next couple of days, giving the server a dedicated 1tb backup drive and moving my backups on to new 2tb drive

You know, if you don't like it your spend the £400+ and the large chunk of your time to host it yourself.

some people will always get problems downloading, there is often nothing i can do about it.

I suspect your problem is due to the sometimes erratic nature of how crush ftp enforces the sped limit. some clients just don't like it.

If you had contacted me first before going of on one about how the site dosen't work atall i might have made special arrangements for you to get the file.

If you really believe there is a problem email me your client's session transcript and your ip address and i can look into it.

so give me your session transcripts and your ip. without that i have no means of investigating the problem.

Look maybe i overreacted, but you need to appreciate my position here the way you put it read almost like a accusation to me. It may be frustrating i am not doing anything to stop it working. As far as i am aware there are no problems, when i test it it works fine.

I haven't had anyone with connection problems like yours for a long time. but i will do everything i can to get it working for you.

May i also suggest you drop in on wired or kdx in some instances they can work better than http or fttp (i won't promise you that i will make any difference though)
