This game works with: Mini vMac

"This iteration of the Chessmaster series offers a strong chess opponent at 12 skill levels, catering for novices to Grandmasters. Its many features include an opening library built around 71,000 moves, and the ability to print out the move history. To help novices there is a teach mode showing all legal moves, a hint move offering what the computer feels is a strong move, and the chance for the Chessmaster to analyse all previous moves in a game. Famous real-life game positions and pre-set challenges offer individual challenges." --MobyGames.com

I've uploaded an updated archive with Balrog's hack included. A Mediafire mirror of it will have to wait, since Mediafire is behaving badly this morning.

Balrog: I sent you an e-mail with your requested DC 4.2 image attached.

ADD: Mediafire started working again, so I've updated the external download.

@MCP: Can you try making a direct disk image of the original disk? Ideally the Copy II method would be used. This requires a 68K Mac that isn't too new, though.

As for the patch, it's very similar to the documented one:

- search for A851 4EBA 3130 42A7
- change to A851 4EBA 3130 602E
This causes part of the verification routine to be skipped over.

- search for 584F 4A40 6724 362E 0008
- change to 584F 4A40 4E71 362E 0008
This also skips part of the verification code. This one is better hidden.

This is all in the 'CODE' 1 resource.

Is there a way you can describe how to patch it, like what's in the Game Hacks & Patch List? Might as well include documentation of what was done in the archive, in case anyone needs it.

I did test it with Mini vMac on my system, works fine!

I looked at how v1.00 was cracked, and modified the routines in v1.02 in the same way. I used Resorcerer's disassembler to do this.

Without a good disassembler it's really hard because offsets changed. (Note: there is a disassembler add-on for ResEdit).

Thanks Balrog, I'll take a look. I've got a busy day ahead though; I have to go vote for the lesser evils today...

ADD: BTW what did you do to crack it?

A trick for making Disk Copy 4.2 images from "bad" disks (this is in general, not specific to Chessmaster 2000): use Sector Copy with Copy II Mac first, then image the copy. Though the program on that disk will still need to be cracked. But it's more complete that way.

should be cracked. please test.

This is a raw image, Disk Copy 6 can handle it -- but the program only works in System 6.

This will work with mini vMac though. Feel free to stuff and re-upload.

I had to have this one sent all the way from the UK to the States; thankfully the seller didn't ask much. My pockets are now completely empty!

I made a more comprehensive archive, but I've left the original intact just in case...

Could someone please unzip this file and upload it again in some other format?

Done.

Thanks for pointing out this useless zip file with particular floating files included.
It's now a Disk Copy 4.2 image, stuffed with Stuffit 4.0 (not from original floppy, for the peoples who complain).

Could someone with OS 10.3 or later please unzip this file and upload it again in some other format? OS 10.2 is the latest that I have, so there is no way for me to make this file work.

I managed it this time, too (as long as Mac OS X supports the resource fork). Wink

I usually can fix such zip files.

Please do never, never, never upload zip files, if a game has been created for Mac OS versions earlier than Mac OS X. Such files just can't be handled by these OS versions. If someone downloads zip files of old Mac games, the old Mac OS (even emulated) can't open them, even some file informations are being lost, as a result the game can't be executed forever.

Anyway, compared to Chessmaster 2100 I think we should hold the Chessmaster 2000.
