The Chex Quest game is a Doom total conversion: maps, characters, textures, music - the lot. The game originally shipped in 1997 on a CD, included in a Chex® cereal box as a promotion for breakfast cereal.
Ralston Foods, the owners of the cereal brand at the time, employed Digital Café to develop the game. Permission was given by ID to use the Doom engine and the Doom 1 IWAD to do this. They released Chex Quest as a 3 episode game of 5 mapped games each, and using its own Chex Quest player for Windows 3.1/95.
Was the Mac community left out altogether? Not quite. On the CD was a special Macintosh folder and a custom "Doom.wad" IWAD but no player. Mac users were informed that they could use this IWAD to play Chex Quest if they already owned a copy of Ultimate Doom. I'm guessing here that funding had blown out for this and the cost of licensing the Mac Doom player would have been too expensive, costs for production had already reached 5 million dollars.
BTW in the Legacy Player, Chex Quest plays the entire Doom 1 maps that were left in this IWAD, not just the Chex Quest conversions. So once you get passed level 5, the maps may seem familiar but the creatures and textures etc are all Chex Quest - Effectively this is Doom 1 with a huge difference
- You can also play 3rd party PWAD additions and they too will have all Chex Quest features if the 3rd party modders have not included new textures etc..
The above DL is a Stuffit 3.6 .sit archive containing a locked Disk Copy 6.3 ".img" file.

If you would like a copy of the original Chex Quest CD you can find it here. Note: the CD image is in about 20 .RAR parts, which extracts to a bin and cue files for burning back to CD. Also on these pages, a wealth of info about Chex Quest, with excellent scans of the original CD, its sleeve & cereal box prints, plus the follow-up Chex Quest 2 & 3 games etc.
CompatibilityWith the supplied player this game runs on PPC Macintosh only.
If you would like to play Chex Quest on a 68040 or PPC Mac that doesn't have a graphics card, or on Basilisk II or SheepShaver; Try the included Doom.wad file in this DL's archive with the Ultimate Doom player. - Or you may also want to try this in Mac OS X, Linux etc;. Instructions for doing this are included in the archive.
Comments
To play the original promotion on a Mac, required owning a copy of The Ultimate Doom for Macintosh (there was no supplied player for the Mac included on the CD). If you had the original, I'm not surprised that it crashed your Mac as the WAD file they supplied for using on the Mac was in pitiful shape.
However; Chex Quest's original DOOM.WAD contained in the above DL has been custom cleaned & repaired for playing OK on a Mac.
I vaguely recall either sending in the box tops or finding the disc inside Chex cereal and being extremely disappointed with this game. It also crashed my Power Macintosh 7200... a lot.
Impressive! It looks substantially better than the DOS version (par for the course)
Here's a 68k port of the game based on instructions in the original package:

I tested it briefly in Mac OS 7.5.3 on BasiliskII emulating a Mac IIci, it works in 256 color mode.
Enjoy
