For most of the activities, you're supposed to take the ball from the left and put it in the slot in the main part of the screen that matches the description on the left. If you're right, you'll hear a chime and get two points; if you're wrong, you'll hear a buzz and the ball will zip back to the left. You then get a second chance for one point. I say "for most" because there are a few that are quizzes where you can take any of the balls and put it in the slot next to the correct answer. Hope that helps - I agree, it's not very intuitive.
I found this interesting. But, I it doesn't appear to acknowledge your efforts in a very effective manner (a sound or an OK popup) after each step so you feel a little skeptical at times. Going to give it another try though to see if I missed anything.
