Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu V (Japanese: 銀河英雄伝説V, translation: "Legends of the Galactic Heroes 5", abbreviation: Gineiden 5) is a science fiction war simulation game based on the novel series by Yoshiki Tanaka and animated series of the same name. The game was fifth in a series and published by Bothtec, Inc. for Windows 95 in 1998. The Macintosh version was published by MediaKite in 2000.
The game features many animated cut scenes and a classical music MIDI soundtrack with works by Ravel, Bruckner, Wagner, and others.
Many of the game scenarios are based on battles depicted in the source novels. Some commenters feel that faithfulness to the source material has been emphasized over balance between the combatants and recommend that players new to the game and/or unfamiliar with the source novels play the Galactic Empire (帝国軍) rather than the Free Planets Alliance (同盟軍) with which it is much more difficult to win some scenarios.
The game was published in Japanese language only.
Verified on Power Mac G4 Cube with Mac OS J1-9.2.2. Also runs on Mac OS X 10.4.11 with Classic.

Can you read Japanese?
Thanks, I hoped this will happen.
By popular demand for all you Japanese readers with really good eyes, I've scanned and uploaded the CD-ROM manual. Enjoy.
I picked up this game at auction for 500 JPY. It's based on a well-known in Japan space opera/military SF series of novels and anime, that I've always thought looked cool but never looked into.
Game play is pretty fun. It emphasizes space ship fleet tactics in two dimensions. This is not a 4X game since it lacks the exploration, expansion, and exploitation aspects of Empire-like games. However, in Campaign Mode, the sequence of scenarios is determined by success or failure at earlier stages, creating a plot for the game play which may or may not match the plot of the source novels.
MIDI renditions of classical works are used for background music, which is both nice and retro.
I would hope so, but we'll see.
58 pages in Japanese. Is there enough interest to make it worth my time to scan it?
Scanning the manual is always of interest.
