This game works with: SheepShaver, Basilisk II,

A really great game, too bad the mac port isn't that well made. The manual can be found here.

If you are able to play the DOS version I would sugest starting out with it because there is a short, sweet and to the point in game tutorial that makes learing the basics of the game ever so easy.

Wikipedia:
Master of Orion (MoO or MOO) is a turn-based, 4X science fiction computer strategy game released in 1993 by MicroProse on the MS-DOS and Mac OS operating systems. The purpose of the game is to lead one of ten races to dominate the galaxy through a combination of diplomacy and conquest while developing technology, exploring and colonizing star systems. The game uses a point-and-click interface as well as keyboard shortcuts to control the management of colonies, technology, ship construction, diplomacy and combat. The name is a reference to the Orion system, the conquerable homeworld of a mythical race that once controlled the galaxy.

If only someone could release a patch to add correct music and sounds to this version…

The game seems to be fun. It has ship design feauture, relatively simple management, wast technology tree and diplomacy. Especially diplomacy feauture seems to be on similar level as civilisation III but spying seems to be a lot more useful here. However this version seems to be lacking music but sound effects are working fine.

In my opinion the Mac version is superior. The two nicest features are the ability to have the main map view window be large (so you can see much more of the map than on the DOS version) and the ability to use somewhat longer names for your planets and ships (including lower-case letters for the latter). I have uploaded a screen shot of the main screen from the Mac version running under Sheepsaver.

Either these screenshots aren't from the Mac version or the version I have is different from the version found here. I found this game to be a quite diverting strategy game with some hidden depths. The biggest flaw I perceived was in the council voting mechanic. It provides near-constant interruptions to normal play and all but guarantees either an early end or an impossible fight. If you want to disable this mechanic (and if the version found here is the same as mine), open 'CODE' resource 10 in ResEdit and change offset 37CA from 6F26 to 6026. This makes it impossible to win the game peacefully, but also makes it possible to play in a big galaxy with more than two opponents without the Silicoids single-handedly voting themselves the winners...

Excellent game, highly replayable. Difficulty levels scale nicely; it's challenging on hard, almost impossible to win on highest setting. Any fans of "expand your empire" games should definitely play this!

I really like the sequel Master of Orion II and so I gave MoO a try. Anyway, I'm sure it was a great game back in the days, but right now it's just a strategy game that is too slow paced, that has a bad handling and pitiful graphics/sound. To me it has only historical value. What about part 2, can someone up this one please? Smile
