"Influenced by Grand Theft Auto, Payback is set across 4 different cities totaling 100 square kilometers of landscape. You can perform all manner of illegal activities to try to achieve wealth, including carjackings, murders, shootings and run-overs.
Stealing vehicles is the real meat of the game, as these must be used for the various missions, which are obtained by walking over to phone boxes, as in GTA. There are dozens of these, all with different handling characteristics, and include trucks, buses and even boats.
The mission structures are non-linear, meaning that how you perform in one part can affect how later parts unfold, and the game includes Perspective Corrected 3D graphics with realistic shadows and rotational effect, as well as a full 3D soundtrack of aggressive rap and mid-tempo rock." --MobyGames.com
This game includes multiplayer deathmatch modes, and an editor for users to make their own deathmatch maps. A number of such maps available online have been added to this archive.
CompatibilityTested with Mac OS 8.6, 9.2.2, and 10.2.8.

A great game. Reminds me of Driver.
I agree, it's mediocre at best. However, more interesting is the background story of this game. If I remember right, it was at first intended to be Amiga game only. It was only later on they ported it to Mac etc.
Its meh not great, the camera angle can get in the way and everything looks a lil choppy. GTA2 was the best in the old school series. This is a kinda rushed project that is especially mac.
Haven't played very far into it but it definitely is alot like GTA. Cool!
I've been waiting for this since September and still no one seems to have it,
I can't hold my breath anymore,
...well maybe a little more.
you must be thinking of driver because Payback is one of the funnest games of all time.
This was one of my favorite games for mac and it doesn't take too much run it, my mac os9 233mhz computer ran it on full detail and it worked perfect without any skipping. this is a great game and sometimes even more fun than any GTA you can buy.
I have a fairly fast HD in there with 1GB of RAM
The faster G3 iMacs might be able to take it, if you're not still using the factory hard drive. I'll see if I can locate it this weekend; if it's not outrageously large maybe I'll upload it.
Oh real? That detailed? Hmm I wounder how my imac 600mhz G3 would handle it lol.
I've got the (Driver) demo somewhere. It really required a lot of hardware to be practical, likely a G4 at the least. My little iMac 333 barely got it started! Frankly it taxed the PlayStation to its limit, too.
Would anyone like to upload the original Driver game for the Mac?
Thanks.
Now that I look at the map in the screenshot, I am having bursts of flashbacks
of when I used to live in California, I think I had this game as a Demo,
and probably that's why I'm so curious about it.
The first Driver on PlayStation One I liked; it was the sequels that sucked. And once GTA 3 came out on PlayStation 2 there was no going back. Best thing about original Driver was ability create your own chase movies with different camera locations and angles.
As far as this game goes, it looks like the original GTA games with the overhead view, which was what kept me from liking those games much. You couldn't get your car up to speed because you couldn't see far enough ahead down the road!
Maybe you're right, but I hope you are wrong,
Driver is a bad game, even on the PS2, I have a copy of Driver 3 for PS2 collecting dust,
I never liked it.
This Payback Screenshot got me curious
Interesting is maybe as good as it gets. I remember reading a review of the game many years ago, it came out rated as one of the worst commercial Mac games ever.
But I can't find that review now, it's not InsideMacGames, nor GameDB. Not sure of any others that have widescale Mac game reviews.
Or am I thinking of Driver ??
ps. GameDB is an excellent source for finding original game requirements for stuff in the last 10-15 years.
This one looks interesting,
