Prince of Persia is a platform game, originally developed by Jordan Mechner in 1989 for the Apple II, that was widely seen as a great leap forward in the quality of animation seen in computer games. Mechner used a process called rotoscoping, in which he studied many hours of film of his younger brother David running and jumping in white clothes, to ensure that all the movements looked just right.
Also unusual was the method of combat: protagonist and enemies fought with swords, not projectile weapons, as was the case in most contemporary games. Mechner has said that when he started programming, the first ten minutes of Raiders of the Lost Ark had been one of the main inspirations for the character's acrobatic responses in a dangerous environment.

For a scanned pdf manual click here
unfortunately it is not classic mac compatible.
For the interested, Prince of Persia's source code has been released by its author on GitHub. It's available to download here.
Hi all,
I've just scanned and uploaded the Prince of Persia I manual but it doesn't seem to be readily downloadable on this page. You can get by following the link below or pressing the 'edit this page' button above and then scrolling down to the bottom of the edit page.
The manual is just a collection of grayscale scans, I'm afraid. I still have to learn how to compose PDFs from scans.
I hope that it helps.

Check replacementdocs.com for "Prince of Persia collection" to find that manual in English.
From a railway kiosk, some years ago I got a CD-ROM for Prince of Persia 1 + 2 (PC/Mac, picture is very similar to this one), but the PDF manual included on disc is:
1.) written in german
2.) very low quality, you need to imagine what could be written on it.
The version available here seems to run with MiniVMac 3.1.3, but not on all hosts it seems.
Windows7 64bit Ultimate = yes
SL 10.6.8 64bit = no
Other Mac emulation seems to play the game in 256 colours with Snow Leo or GNU-Linux host e.g. Mandriva 64bit.
Mac emulation with W7U plays sounds somewhat strange, unfortunately.
Might be a good idea for Windows users to set up a GNU-Linux host for Mac emulation, either native or in Virtual Box. CD-ROM support is working in emulation on my Mandriva 64bit host, by the way. (Needless to say Chris Bauer developed his emulators on a Mandriva host, I guess.)
I;m awfully tempted, nect time I get my boxes of original games out - they're still packed away in the shipping boxes from emmigrating here - I'll pull the original manual for this and scan it. It wasn't that big, I typed it all up in Word 5 to imitate the original before.
I'll also add the original disk images to the game download - could have sworn I did this before but now it's just an installed version. I'm sure the disks came with two versions, B/W and Color I think, but I've not installed it for 20 years.
i'm sure this runs in Mini vMac, too. Minimum requirement is Mac OS 6.07, Mac Plus, SE, Classic.

Compared to some games, it always runs a little slower, he really just jogs. You may want to check a youtube video for comparison. But its probably just incompatible, which is disappointing.
Not a high tech answer, I've only played it.
I've tried this game countless times in both SheepShaver and Basilisk II, changing the memory settings, the colour depth, everything. No matter what, the music is laggy and butchered. I'm running Windows 7, does anyone have any idea what's wrong with it?
Any interest in a patch that removes the need to look up potion codes?
Wow, I remember this game on my old Mac Classic in Black n' White =D Its so cool to play it again on my iBook in colour!
I too would really appreciate the manual, as its been a while since I played this...
This game is a cult classic and heaps of fun. RECOMMENDED

Can't hardly wait!
@Adam and MacWise
'Helpers & Add-ons' sounds good and I'll put it on the todo list. So one day soon you'll be able to add those save games etc. Which are actually a very important part of the archive experience.
I see, I guess if we can have a section labeled "General Files" that would be fine. I don't want you to have to go through a lot of work to get it done though. I have recently found many cheats, trainers, save games, etc, for many of the files here.
Your right, they are not manuals, but some good cheats non the less.
Better call it Helpers & Add-ons.
@Adam
At the moment we can only show 1 manual but the files have successfully been uploaded. With a bit of fiddling this can be changed. Looking at the files, I see they're not really manuals, we might need to add a new field like 'General files' or do you think putting them in the 'Manuals' field is suitable?
I tried to edit this page to add two cheaters and a level editor, but the files have not shown up as of yet. I can go to Revisions and see my comment, but that's it. Any ideas.
If you can describe the situation, I might be able to offer some suggestions. What version of Mac OS are you using? Did you get it to unpack properly? What happens when you try to run the game? Do you get error messages?
My version works but I am unable to start the game...I'm playing it on my iBook...can anyone help?
if you're a Windows user, you will also need to download SDL 1.2 libraries and a GTK+2 Runtime.
Checked the manual "codes" - which despite appearances, never came with the game - against the real manual, and they're OK.
i dont understand the potion challanges. i drink the right one according to the manual but it still sends me to the start without my saved progress. any thoughts?
Well for me it's different. Just read it upside down.
If the document is not already extracted, drag the file onto the Stuffit Expander icon, and when the Stuffit icon highlights or darkens, release the mouse button. You should then have a folder containing the Prince Of Persia programme and the files it needs.
If you have already tried this, you might have received a corrupted file and should download it again.
I tried running this game with Basilisk II but it says:
The document "Persia(COLOR)" could not be opened, because the application program that created it could not be found.
Someone please help me.
The manual link has the info for potion challenges. It's a png image though.
Can someone upload the manual please? I can't past the potion challenges.
