PuppyLove The software program that's going to be your best friend. Macintosh 512K or Plus 1986 by Tom Snyder Productions,Inc. Co-published by Tom Snyder Productions, Inc. and Addison-Wesley Publishing Company, Inc. (description text from the floppy label)
"If you want to play it under System 6 without multifinder, rename the "Finder" application in the archive to something unique (like "Puppy Love"). This game was surprisingly complex for its time, having dozens upons dozens of different tricks your dog could accomplish. It uses a compact, intuitive interface which is of course part of the Mac's hallmark. There's not really a way to become "good" at this game, you just have to be patient and wait for the dog to perform the tricks you need and positive-reinforce him with a cookie. This game gains geek-cool points for using Macintalk speech." - MuOn

Sorry, I take it back -- MacinTalk works just fine. (You'll have to discover just how to trigger it!)
I successfully built a floppy using the system disk from here:
http://www.earlymacintosh.org/disk_images.html#System_2
... taking just the System file and adding it to what was on the image already. But after I discovered how to trigger sounds, I went back and tried it with my HD20-enabled Finder 4.4/System 4, and it worked as well.
So -- at least on my unenhanced 512K -- I'm ready to declare this app working, with the addition of any System file between 2 and 4.
OK, looking into this further: there's no System file on the disk, and the "Finder" is actually a strange mixture of (what looks like) MFS-era MiniFinder and the actual game. I've gotten the app to launch from a combination of Finder 5.4 and System 4, but without MacinTalk working correctly. In fact, no sounds play at all. (Other games, such as Crystal Quest, play audio just fine on this system.)
I think what I'll try next is to build a circa-1986 system disk, rather than the 1987 one I have now, and see if that fixes the sound. But I think you are right that the best option would be to find an actual forensic image of the disk...
This is helpful information. It's good to know the disk actually functions. I'll play around with it more. I've tried reformatting the image as MFS and running on an emulated 128k, but still no dice.
Could you give a little more detail about your specific setup? System/Finder version? How you handled the image? Did you simply copy the contents of the image to your AppleShare volume? How large is the volume, etc.
Somewhat improbably, this worked for me running off an AppleShare volume, on an unenhanced 512K. Didn't hear any sound, but only had a few minutes to play around with it.
Upon launch the built-in MiniFinder started up, so I guess in a way control was transferred over to the system file on the network volume. Again, kind of surprised this worked...
My 512K was running with the HD20 INIT, however, which might explain why I didn't notice any problems with a non-MFS disk.
Anybody tried this one lately? Anyone have another image or original media? I get a system error every time I try to start the app, both in Mini vMac and on a vintage machine. I've tried various systems from System 2.0, Finder 4.1 to System 6.0.2.
The original disk had to have been 400k MFS. I'm not sure how much this disk images differs from an original. Great game, though. Back in the day.
My cousin remembered using this game but because of the propietary syntax has been unable to progress. Is the manual available anywhere?
