Star Wars Dark Forces is a 1995 first person shooter from LucasArts. It's a great game - similar to Marathon and the like.
CompatibilityDark Forces puts you in the boots of mercenary for hire, Kyle Katarn. Initially charged with retrieving the Death Star plans from and Imperial base and delivering them to Princess Leia, Kyle subsequently is hired by the Rebel Alliance to seek out and destroy a new threat - an army of super, mechanized stormtroopers: the dark troopers. Dark Forces lets you explore numerous Star Wars worlds with total freedom, all while blasting an onslaught of enemies and achieving mission objectives. Was always exciting finding the secret rebel base in the first level
Hey, I'm brand new to this site, led here by my desire to once again play Dark Forces. Since you downloaded the game so recently and it seems to have worked fine, I was wondering if you could help me through the process. Will it play on OS X or will I have to download an earlier OS? And what emulator do you recommend? Thanks!
Loaded this up last night for a quick look, and to listen to that wonderful background music again.
4 hours later... still playing...
Where to download the toast version??
Happens to me with all games, always end up playing the demo bit.
You know you're really taken by a game when you want the demo *after* you have played the full version. Happened to me with Marathon.
Demo still available from Lucas Arts:
ftp://ftp.lucasarts.com:21//demos/mac/Dfdemo.bin
And the updates as well:
ftp://ftp.lucasarts.com:21//patches/mac/darkforces1.2.sea.hqx
ftp://ftp.lucasarts.com:21//patches/mac/df1.2patch.sit.bin
is anybody getting this error when then try to install dark forces:
ERROR: Unable to find or read file "HelNum.fnt". Make sure you have the Dark Forces CD in your CD-ROM drive.
i have mac os x 10.3.9 and i'm trying to run it in classic mode. any help would be appreciated. i used to own this game back in the day and i'm craving some dark forces action.
Thanks a lot for uploading the .toast image. Couldn't get the .img to work before, but now I'm more than happy. Awesome game!
yeah think I will upload the CD!
Can you re-upload the full CD image, now that we have the space?
This game comes with a "standard install", "small install", "large install". All are identical except for the amount of files in the data folder. In addition, the game requires the "cd" to be inserted to be played because the cd itself has a data folder with even more data than the large install (and yes, I've copied the largest data folder - it still requests the cd). The more interesting thing is that it isn't really an install at all - the program is the actual game. You would usually copy the size that fits your drive over to your computer, but you would need the cd still inserted. This cd image would not fit in a 60MB space. To fix these limitations, I made the following adjustments to the image:
* removed small install folder
* removed standard install folder
* Made alias to game application in Large Install to CD's root folder
* Erased data folder in Large Install folder
* Aliased CD's Root data folder to Large Install folder
These changes allow you to play directly from the disk image (and to make it small enough to upload to this site). If you want to install, copy large install to your hard disk, and replace the Data folder alias in the large install folder with the data folder on the disk image root. Please note that the game won't start without the "CD inserted" so you will have to mount the image to play the game anyway.
It's easiest just to play from the disk image.
Works great on 9.2.2 on authentic mac - a dual G4 Mirrored Drive Door that can dual boot ox 9 and X
*Sometimes* works on Sheepshaver, MacOS 7.6.0, 640X480, 256 colors. Used Mac rom update rom from apple's website.
Game settings:
Screen size: 640x240 (letterbox)

Dark forces was the first Star Wars FPS period.
I can remember that Dark Forces was one of the first first-person shooters to get
grenadesthermal detonators right. BTW: Basilisk explodes when I try to run the installer. I guess I'll have to dig the beige G3 out of the closet.actually released in 95 doom 2 was released in 94 and this game was said to be a reverse engineer of that engine.
