A unique strategy game, and easily one of the best available. Although the Macintosh port was released a fair degree of time after the MS-DOS version, it benefited immensely from a little extra tweaking.
Ask anyone to define what made Settlers II stand out and they will probably mention the transport system, with every building connected by a road where goods are carried and people walk from A to B. While this adds a unique layer of strategic planning, the inability to directly manipulate your subjects is probably what causes the gameplay to stand out from the rest, with the placement of buildings taking centre stage in how resources are best utilised, defences are set up, and effective transportation to avoid the game's answer to total gridlock. Even when you do take direct control of your subjects, it is kept to a perfectly simplistic format that doesn't distract from the fluidity of gameplay.
The pixel graphics are crisp and wonderful to look at, the campaign's storyline is compelling and the replay value is immense. Overall, the game is worth trying and the Macintosh version is probably the best iteration available, although the Nintendo DS port is not without its charms.
Network play is not supported, however there is a project bringing the game to modern platforms that offers internet play entitled 'Settlers 2.5 - Return to the Roots'.
The last archive at top-right is bin-cue image of the game. Can burn with Toast to make a CD that has both game and audio partitions.
The bin-cue was constructed using the data partition (game) uploaded here. Toast reports that as a hybrid Mac/PC image, however the PC part has no executable so I have omitted it.

I'd like to play this game, but not sure which download to use. The sit file is over a hundred megs less than the zip file... what does the zip have that the sit doesn't?
I downloaded it again and it decompresses now ! Thanks again !
MD5 (Settlers II-bin-cue.zip) = 17b430bf4a0f8dc05d4e5f52f5497949
I downloaded it myself and you are right...it is corrupted. This must have happened during my upload, as the zip on my desktop unpacks just fine. I have uploaded a fresh copy so hopefully it will be OK now.
Sorry, but the uploaded .zip file of the Cue/Bin-image seems to be damaged !
I tried several programs to decompress (Archive-Helper, unzip, StuffIt Expander, WinZip), they all say that the Bin-Part got damaged somehow.
Please re-compress the file and re-upload it !
MD5 (Settlers II.zip) = 443975d8a93577ddb2ba301c95400900
All done.
I notice that the audio tracks on my reconsructed disc have time intervals between them that are slightly different from the original that gontzol provided. I hope it doesn't matter. If it causes a problem, I will redo the image.
Okay, I made a ZIP file:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/z5toqknaqgnahen/Audio%20CD.Sd2f.zip
Thanks gontzol. Unfortunately, I cannot get Toast 7 or anything else to recognise the file. Can you please wrap it up in a Stuffit archive and send me the archive. That should protect it during transmission.
Hi mrdav. Don't know if you caught it, but I posted a temporary link to the file you asked for on your guestbook page.
Thank you gontzol and IIGS_User for agreeing to help. Since I started with my request to gontzol, I will continue with that, and if gontzol is ultimately unable to help, I will ask IIGS_User for assistance.
So, gontzol, can you please mount your CD so that you can see the Audio CD volume on the desktop. Then start up Toast 7, click the Audio button, and drag the mounted closed Audio CD volume to the open Toast window. Once all the audio tracks have loaded, save as a disk image. This will produce a file with a Sd2f suffix. That is the file I need, thank you.
I own german CD version, could help with Audio CD partition as well.
Sorry, I tried creating bin/cue files with Toast 7 but it would only copy the data portion. I also tried copying or creating an image of the audio portion, but that didn't work. Best I could do would be to rip the tracks and write a new audio CD/image from them and work with that.
Hi gontzol. Since you have the original CD would you be willing to provide a bin-cue image that captures both game and audio tracks? If you are unable to do this, might you instead make available to me a Toast image of the audio partition, and I will reconstruct a CD and take a bin-cue of that. The file that is uploaded here (but currently unavailable) has the audio separated out as single mp3 files which is not the original format.
Thanks, fascinating hint below.
Seems unmount in host operating system is operational to get the CD into the emulation.
I don't know if others are having as much trouble as I did getting Settlers II to work in SheepShaver or Basilisk II, but after trying a few things I was able to get it running in both (on OS X). Strangely, it involved using a disk image of the data portion of the game CD, and also using the original CD at the same time.
I had errors when trying to create the disk image of the data portion from my game CD using OS X's Disk Utility, so I used "dd" on command line. My CD was mounted in OS X at /dev/disk2, and since the game CD has both a data portion and a CD audio portion, I created a disk image of the data portion only using this command in the Terminal:
sudo dd if=/dev/disk2s1s2 of=Settlers\ II.dmg bs=2048
(You can check which disk number is correct for you by typing e.g. "ls -l /dev/disk*" in the Terminal; if your game CD is disk1 you'll see "disk1s1" through "disk1s9" for the audio tracks and "disk1s1s2" will be the data portion).
To get Settlers II to run in SheepShaver I did this:
- Added "Settlers II.dmg" to the list of SheepShaver volumes (with SheepShaverPrefs app).
- Put the physical game CD in my CD/DVD drive.
- Opened Disk Utility and unmounted both the "Audio CD" and "Settlers II" portions, but without ejecting the CD.
- Launched SheepShaver and started Settlers II successfully (works from the disk image or from a copy of the program on another disk). Opening movie was blank for me. There was no music while playing, but you can just import the music into iTunes and play it from there if you want.
To get Settlers II to run in Basilisk II, I did this:
- Added "Settlers II.dmg" to the list of Basilisk II volumes using BasiliskIIGUI.
- Unchecked "Disable CD-ROM Driver" in BasiliskIIGUI.
- Put the physical game CD in my CD/DVD drive.
- Unmounted only the "Audio CD" portion (you can "eject" only that portion in the Finder).
- Launched Basilisk II and started Settlers II successfully. Opening movie shows properly, but again no music while playing.
The game plays nicely -- a lot faster than I remember it playing fifteen years ago! I played it for an hour in Basilisk II and it worked well, though it crashed on me once when I clicked on the "Main Selection" button. It also ran well in SheepShaver until I recklessly ran other apps in OS X which caused the game to freeze. I'm running OS X 10.8.5.
Site bug I overlooked when updating. Should be fixed. I also fixed the comments showing up in edit mode.
Maybe server switching or similar?
Whats up with this page? The downloads gone, im pretty sure there used to be a screenshot and the edit button hacks up an error
Thanks Daxeria, for pointing out the German version, which is the 3rd download above now. It is version 0.9.9beta, which also includes 68k + PowerPC. The retail version I own includes versions 1.0 and 1.1, along with a note to run the game using its version 1.1, both are fat binaries.
I don't know why I thought it includes 68k code only, but NativeChecker told me otherwise, now.
I've uploaded the archive that has been here for some time as an external link, but also uploaded a larger more complete second archive I made from original media, along with an external link to download it.
The original game is an 68k game only (no PowerPC code inside), on real hardware its best run is with an 68k Mac. If you want to run this game on a real PowerPC Mac, you must know it will be slowed down, because PowerPC Macs have to emulate the game's 68k code.
This game badly needs a proper writeup, i'll get on it later unless someone beats me to it
Nehoo, from version 0.7, Settlers II Back To The Roots will support OSX, there is a nightly for it already but i don't know much about it as the site is in German. There is a heavy emphasis on network play, which is neat

after 12 years of owning this game, i haven't gotten bored of it in the slightest, altho without an OS9 machine i've had to revert to a version running under DosBox.
