The price at Lairware is now $5 !!
It has some cool stuff built in, like different game tiles for different systems, updated graphics, auto combat (which you can toggle), auto heal, etc. I'd head over there and pony up the $5 if I were you!!
There are different versions? That would explain the availability of the b/w screenshot shown here.
Is the original 1986 version available, like, anywhere at all?
Thanks. Something subjectively better than personal opinion written before.
That's an, uh, interesting little summary for this game. Sniping at some guy nobody knows and finding oblique ways to restate the game's age. That's really useful to everyone. I hope nobody minds my paring this down to relevant factual info.
This is the best port of Ultima III I've ever seen. The black and white screenshot isn't from this download. The version here is a full color, enhanced port by LairWare which is still available for purchase for $15.

The newest version, 2.0, works on Mac OS X and there is also an updated version, 1.4.2, of the classic Mac version available.
The download here is the shareware unregistered version so its all good. I think I'm going to buy this because it really is the best version of this game in my opinion.
The b/w screen implies this game should run in Mini vMac as well, but this must be wrong.
The Readme file included with this d/l tells:
Motorola 68020 processor type minimum
Mac OS System version 7.0 or newer
256 colours by 640x480 pixels.
My attempts to test this game in Mini vMac results in an 'abnormal situation' within Mini vMac:
'Coprocessor not installed'

I've just added two little helpers I came across the web:
The 33k download is a character editor for Ultima III that gives your characters a boost, or turns them into PURE GODS!
The 88k download is the Portrait patch for the Mac version of Ultima III. It replaces the existing portraits in the U3 Graphics file, so be sure to apply it only to a copy.
