Reach for the Stars

"Reach for the Stars is the earliest known commercially published example of the 4X games (Explore, Expand, Exploit, Exterminate) genre. It was written by Roger Keating and Ian Trout of SSG of Australia and published in 1983 for the Commodore 64 and then the Apple II in 1985. Version 3 added a DOS port for the IBM PC, although the DOS port did not share all of the features that the other platforms had. The game was eventually ported to pre-Mac OS X versions of the Macintosh operating system, such as System 6. It was also ported to the Amiga, though which version was ported is not known.

"The first game in the series, Warlords, was created in 1989 by Steven Fawkner and was published by SSG. It featured eight different clans battling for the control of the mythical land of Illuria: Sirians, Storm Giants, Grey Dwarves, Orcs of Kor, Elvallie, Horse Lords, Selentines, and Lord Bane. Each clan could either be controlled by the computer or by a human player, allowing up to eight participants taking turns in hot seat play.

Great WW2 naval warfare simulator with excellent UI (albeit with dated graphics) and involving gameplay. The only down side is a lack of a campaign option and scenario creator (it's PC-only). Otherwise highly recommended if you like Harpoon-style games, but probably not your cup of tea if you don't. btw, nice of the publisher to give this one away.
