The game follows the story of Nicholas Dove, a boy with a thirst for adventure and the high seas. What starts as a quest for simple excitement could very well end up with his walking the plank in a sea full of sharks, or being slashed apart by a sword, as Nicholas senses that his fate is pre-ordained, and tied somehow with the mighty pirate RedJack, and the vow of vengeance he made 17 years ago.

"Skull Cracker can be considered the spiritual successor to the 1991 title Creepy Castle that Bill Appleton wrote for Reactor Inc. The game is set in an alternate world where it is normal to see zombies and monsters roam the streets. They are kept under control by MEI (Mortality Enforcement, Inc.) - an organization that "helps the dead stay dead". As the monsters grow in number however, they organize themselves and demand civil rights.

The game begins in April 1942 with the player (whose name is Frank Carlson) being caught in an air raid during the London Blitz of World War II and being sent back in time to 1912 with an opportunity to change history. In 1912, he was a British secret agent on the RMS Titanic, who must retrieve a priceless copy of the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám and now has a second chance to complete his mission. The open-ended gameplay allows the player to either follow the storyline by solving puzzles or simply explore the rooms of the ship.
