Real-time strategy with a twist, Black & White challenges you to build and expand a godly empire. The “twist” is a creature, your creature, a minion who learns and grows, eventually becoming your primary force in the surrounding lands. The colours “black” and “white” indicate your ability to choose between styles of play. Teach your creature to love the inhabitants or terrorise them.

You choose from one of 4 different herders, all with their own personalities, and the strengths and weaknesses which come with them, to play the game with. Bo Peep, for example, is described as, "Shepherd by day, and lead singer of a rock band by night. Has 'a way' with sheep, coaxing even the most stubborn out of danger." Bo works well with Long Wool sheep from what I can tell, but doesn't do so well with your Neo Genetic sheep.

Rover the dog is frequently kidnapped by robots, and it is the player's (Roger the owner) job to enter into robot territory and get him back, hence the name "Rescue Rover".

Each level starts with Roger climbing up a ladder set into the floor, and the player completes the level by arriving back at this ladder with Rover - at which point Roger climbs down with Rover.
In essence, you take a chassis and build a machine. The machine you need to build will vary on the type of activity you're set out to do (racing, seek & destroy, etc). You place items on your chassis (radars, thrusters, rockets, etc) that you think you might need to help you win. Next, you wire (or program) your machine with specific instructions on what do.
