The plan: sneak out and find a way to take from the Empire a chunk of land for Exile to use as its own. After many years in caves, your people long to see the light of the sun again.

Before this can happen, however, much spying and investigation needs to be done, to find out the state of things in the Empire. After much thought, training, and reflection, a small group of adventurers has been selected to be the first spies out on the surface: you.

Well, guess who just struck back?

The Empire realized, overnight, what a brood of vipers they had given birth to. There were two reactions. The first was sudden. Nobody else was teleported below. The misfits of the surface were kept in prisons, rather than caves.

The Roman Empire is at the height of its power, under the rule of the cruel Emperor Nero. The isle of Britannia is wracked by rebellion against its Roman masters, as the Celtic tribes ransack city after city.

In the depths of the wilderness, the village of Nethergate, forgotten and ignored, is hatching a conspiracy. They will conspire with the faery kingdoms, the dark, secret, wild powers, to destroy their Roman conquerors. Magic is dying, but there is enough of it left to put an end the the Empire. Your job is to help them.

Or, your job is to stop them.

Instead of being set on a checkered board, the game is played on a series of floating islands. Each side start on its own island, which may have one or more guard towers. Movement is still turn-based but unlike chess, each side can move all its pieces in a single turn. In addition to that each side can produce new units or built bridges at the expense of mana points. Bridges are used to reach other islands where there can be additional towers.
