Depth&Volume is a Control Panel that lets you change the main screen depth (i.e. the number of colors displayed) or the speaker's volume on the fly with a keystroke. Depth&Volume is very small (it uses about 2K of system memory) and very easy to use ... once you get into the habit of remembering the keyboard shortcuts.

The following keys are used to change the display's colour depth (where "#" is the modifier key combination chosen in the Control Panel):

#1 = Change to 1 bit (black and white)
#2 = Change to 2 bit (4 colors or greys)

Compatibility:

Obviously the computer's capabilities will limit which Depth modes will work - you can't change to "Milllions" of colours on a Mac Plus for example.

List_Files_img.sit

List Files is a very straightforward utility that creates text catalogs of any folder or disk you drag on it. The text file can be edited and saved for later use (you'll be able to read or print it with any word processor or text editor). Text catalogs are a very convenient way to keep track of unmounted volumes (like floppies or SyQuest's) because they are small, easy to read and easy to search.

Application is on a DiskCopy 4 disk image (1.44MB) inside a StuffIt 3.5 archive.

Compatibility:

According to the Read Me, this application works in System 4.2 or better. Has been tested in System 6 and Mac OS 9.2.

In System 7 and better you can drag the file to be checked onto the Verifile application icon. In System 6 and earlier you have to run the Verifile application, then use the Open command from the file menu.

Verifile is a small utility that calculates a checksum and a CRC32 on both the data and resource forks of any file that's dropped on it. This is useful if you want to compare two files that are not on the same machine without having to copy them over a network or modem connection. If the hexadecimal numbers displayed by Verifile match, chances are that the two files are equal.

Application is on a DiskCopy 4 disk image (1.44MB) inside a StuffIt 3.5 archive.

Compatibility:

Like Alessandro's other simple applications, Verifile may work in System 4.2 or better.

Extension which disables/hides the "Clean Up Desktop" menu item, just above Shut Down on the Special menu under Mac OS 7 (8?). Very handy for those who have their desktop sorted just the way they want.

There are two AppleScripts that will save and restore the icon placement too -- very handy!
