Sad chimes at boot usually indicate a hardware problem.
If the CD was not bootable you should just get a blinking question mark.

The Chimes of death (yes, that is really what they are called) indicate
other hardware problems. On most Macs, a picture of a sad Mac will
appear in place of the usual smiling Mac, with error codes underneath.
