The Mac OS Anthology, intended for third-party developers to test their software against different versions of the Macintosh operating system, was first announced by Steve Jobs at the WWDC in May 1999. Due to its archival nature the various Mac OS versions are stored on non-bootable DVD-ROM media.
The first release came with all Mac OS operating systems from Mac OS 7 to 8.5 in a boxset with 4 DVD-ROMs which included up to 25 localized versions of each operating system release. It was sold at a price of $199 or $149 to Apple Developer Connection (ADC) members who ordered before May 14. The price was dropped to $99 in 2000.
The second release introduced Mac OS 8.6 on two additional DVD-ROMs and was available at the end of 1999.
The third release, available in February 2000, added Mac OS 9 in 15 languages on two additional DVD-ROMs. A second boxset labeled Mac OS Anthology 2000 edition added the now 4 additional discs to the original boxset from the first release. Preserved here is this third release.
The fourth and final release from 2001 grew to a total of 10 DVD-ROM discs, adding Mac OS 9.0.4 and 9.1 as well as the first release of Mac OS X on two additional DVD-ROMs.
Worldwide System Software for Developers
Revised December 9, 1999
1999 Edition
Mac OS Anthology is a collection of Mac OS or System Software releases in up to 32 languages, spanning from Mac OS 7.0 to 9.0. This collection has been gathered for Apple Developer Connection members to conveniently provide Mac OS releases in multiple languages, with the goal of asssisting you in extending your product's reach into international markets and environments.*
As additional releases of the Mac OS are made available in this calendar year, they will be collated on additional DVD-ROM media and mailed to you as part of your Mac OS Anthology subscription. All subscriptions to the Mac OS Anthology, 1999 Edition, will expire on December 31, 1999, regardless of purchase date or expiration date of ADC membership.
*This product is intended for use in testing, localization, and product development only. For complete Licensing and usage restrictions, please see the Licensing Info folder at the top level of this disc.
Eight DVD-ROM-5 discs with no regional encoding, for use in any DVD-ROM or DVD-RAM drive that will read HFS or HFS+ standard file types.
Included in this set are the complete software installers that shipped as the CD installation version for each release or, in the case of pre-CD-ROM releases, shipped as a floppy disk set. To ensure that testing most closely matches end-user environments, images contain the full set of software available to end-users with the exception of the System folder. The System folder is currently excluded due to limitations in Disk Copy's ability to save bootable ROM information within the Disk Copy image format.
Apple Spec Database™**. Mac OS Anthology contains the latest version of the Apple Spec database available as these discs went to press. The Apple Spec database is a bound FileMaker Pro document that contains information on the entire Apple product line and the configurations in which it was released, including System, Power, Video, Ports, Logic Board, Memory, Software, Sound, Storage, Displays, and Printers.
**This database contains detailed information about current as well as discontinued Apple products. Some products may not be available in the US. This data is not intended to represent product availability.
Each DVD-ROM contains a folder of the standard Mac OS Utilities, including 5xxx/6xxx Tester 1.1, AppleShare 3.6.5, Disk Copy, Disk First Aid, Drive Setup, Drive Setup Guide, and SimpleText. For best results, it is recommended that you copy these to your local hard drive.
Power Macintosh computer, 16MB RAM, 300MB free space on hard disk drive, DVD-ROM drive.
To locate releases, open the desired release number folder, then select a language. Within the folder for a language you will see one or more Disk Copy images for the Mac OS files.
Disk Copy images are coded with an alphanumeric name comprised of the release's country or language, plus its Apple part number. Folders are also indicated by country code or language code, plus the full language name.
For example, located in folder Mac OS 8.0: CH-Chinese Simplified

***Following Mac OS Anthology packaging press date, it was determined that the update to Mac OS 9 would ship only as part of the Mac OS 9 software installer offered on CD-ROM and via the web. Please look within the Mac OS 9.0 Disk Copy image of your choice for software to update earlier releases of the Mac OS to version 9.0.
The torrent in the provided zip file Mac OS Anthology '99 trackerless torrent.zip is the same one, so if you don’t want to get involved with 4shared, use the download option from the top.
No tracker is provided from the torrent! If DHT (i.e. trackerless) does not work, you need to add the right one manually!

Anyone know of another source for these discs? The torrent is about as dead as you can get.
US Release of Mac OS 7.5 is missing. Was that really not included in the original anthology, or was it somehow deleted?
I suggest compressing the disk images. I've compressed each image separately using xz, yielding a grand total of about 23 GB GB, versus 30 GB for the uncompressed images. I could create a torrent with compressed images if you guys think it's a good idea, although seeding the first batch will take me ages. Also, why isn't this on a tracker where it will gain more exposure, such as TPB? Is it 'secret' for a reason?
Tracker is dead. But I've downloaded this disks just fine, but it took a week.
Anyone knows where can I download the last two disks of the Anthology 9 and 10?
Downloaded the .zip of the torrent file.
Then I tried to download the tracker and manually add but the tracker link is dead.
Anybody have the tracker?
Let's keep this ball alive.
Infradata, I set my uTorrent to a limit of 2.5GB/7days. I do not have unlimited bandwidth and that's about the amount I'm comfortable to give for free.
You should eventually get a full feed. Even if takes another month if nobody else but me source it.
Hi there, If you have the mac anthology i am a seeder but i only have 90.3% of total file to seed. Can you supply me a like to get 100% of torrent, then i can continue to seed 100% of time, (i have unlimited bandwidth). I would hate this image to "disappear" i am also attempting to get HD20 startup disk, and "system software" install images for 400k, 800k and 1.4mb disks (if they existed) for systems pre-1.0 to atleast OS 8.0 (last one i know could be special ordered on 1.4mb floppies)
email me at infradata.it @ gmail or PM me here thanks a ton, and never let a OS fade away
One might also presume, the guy who uploaded to MF back then, still has it on his server.
Cant harm looking there.
Hi AtomicMan,
Can you or anybody else seed this again? Trying to download. Once I download it I can seed it for a while too, pay it forward.
Thanks again for this cool archive.
AtomicMan, the Download link at the top is the correct torrent file. If you have the original files, you can restart reseeding without re-downloading. I would work with copies though.
nil0bject, me, I can barely allocate 10GB/month to resharing this. Stupid metered internet. (Ok, I'm also cheap and took the basic package.) I'll try to reopen my Torrent client from time to time.
Early last month, there was re-interest in this torrent and about a dozen people were able to get 100% complete status on it (including me). So the files are out there. Do not lose hope. I would recommend to set priorities on each files so that you can have something partially usable faster.
Do you have the time/bandwidth to upload the images separately to bayfiles? They have a 5GB limit. Make sure to make an account with them first, so you can keep track of the files.
Otherwise, I am grabbing the torrent now slowly. I can upload disks 1 and 8 if you want/need.
Thanks
If anyone is unable to find the seed, please PM me directly. I do not have the version that was seeded, but I do have a pristine archived version of this tucked away. 28.98gb
According to this site : http://www.storiesofapple.net/the-mac-os-anthology.html, the original Mac OS anthology (1999 edition) only contained 6 CDs, going up to 8.6.
There was a 2000 edition adding 2 more CDs, going up to 9.0 (it seems to be the edition available from MG).
Then there was an ultimate 2001 edition adding 2 more CDs again, going up to 9.1 as well as the first OS X version.
Did anyone ever managed to find this edition ?
Will seed tonight if I can find my copy again
Seed please
Please seed !
None of the links are working for me, short of paying for 4Shared.
thanks so much, the collection is once again complete, I really need to burn the set before anything else happens lol
i will try to reupload it soon, im not sure if the link on the page is to sheeps mediafire or mine tho
EDIT: Re uploaded
as of now 1-13 is gone, I had to start from scratch after the hd I had downloaded the complete set to died. so I'm back to re downloading the set
all the ones on my server (excluding disc 8 ) are the hole filer prior to splitting, i think i re uploaded 1-13 anyhow
Yep, 1-13 is gone. Maybe Max can kindly re-upload if he should find the time.
Probably the missing one is available on his wired server?
For the other disks, I would recommend to grab it while you can.
It looks like the "Mac OS Anthology '99 Disk 1.part13.rar" file is missing from the "Disc 1" folder.
