The first download is the CD-ROM version of Microsoft Office 4.2.1 which contains the installer and manuals.

The Installer disks download is from Disk 1 of the "Microsoft Select Application Pool". It includes floppy disk images, and also includes an installer within the folder named "Install from CD" which means you can install Office 4.2.1 without making 33 floppy disks or mounting 33 floppy disk images. The download is a disk img wrapped up with StuffIt 5.5. Also uploaded to the internal server.
Microsoft Office 4.2 is an office suite designed for the Mac. This software package is a compilation of some of Microsoft's most used programs. Included in Office 4.2 are Microsoft Word 6.0, Microsoft Excel 5.0 and Microsoft PowerPoint 4.0. Their look and feel is exactly the same as their counterparts developed for Windows based machines but this suite can be had for far less than more modern versions. A wide variety of people use this software package. Included in these are home users, businesses and quite a few universities.
The three main programs have very distinct uses. Microsoft Word 6.0 is a word processor that carries many upgrades over its predecessor. Microsoft Excel 5.0 is a spreadsheet program that incorporates a PivotTable Wizard that allows drop and drag movement of data by category name. Microsoft PowerPoint 4.0 is a presentation type piece of software that has become the standard in most of the large corporations that use Macs.
Office 4.2 incorporates macros and drag and drop between Office programs to make this suite even more powerful. For Word 6.0 AutoText is included that automatically fixes typographical errors and makes corrections an easier task. PowerPoint has a new feature that allows you to make a Word outline from your PowerPoint presentation.
This version of Office is compatible with most other types of apple software including QuickTime, AppleScript, PowerTalk and QuickDraw GX.

Is there any official statement from Microsoft's side on this Site (if yes, where?) or was it taken down precautionly ?
This is ridiculous, this piece of software is over 20 years old and out of sale for almost 15 years by now. Microsoft has recently donated even the sourcecode of "Word for Windows 1.1" which was current 1991-1994.
What is next ? All of Apple's discontinued software (Mac OS, Claris Software, Hypercard, MacPaint, MacDraw, …) ?
If we take all software down, you can close MG as well and these pieces of software history of Macintosh might be lost forever !

No download available on request of Microsoft Corporation? How did this version survived this long here? I fear for the remaining old Office Suites. Now that the Garden limits are greater, i was planning to "preserve" the gold edition of '98, now i am not too sure

I have decided to upload the installer floppy disks that are on the Microsoft Select Application Pool, rather than my own copies. I could not be sure that my disks had not acquired personal registration details and I had no fresh Mac OS install to test this out. The picture of the floppy disk that I uploaded is from my own disk set.
