Another productivity software from Microsoft. It just like Microsoft Office, but still used in home and small office use. Only them includes the word processor, the spreadsheet, and a database. Feel free to add more information here. All of the disk images is in 1.4MB HFS image which can be mounted on the emulator or be written to a high-density Macintosh floppy disk on any computer with a variable-speed floppy drive.
[2nd DL]: Ms Works 4.0B (US English), Disk Copy 4.2 images of original media in StuffIt 3.6 ".sit" archive, for better backwards compatibility.

Hi, I'm guessing that you DL'd the CD compilation I'd linked to. After I'd had posted that link, I uploaded a more "Mac friendly" copy of the Ms Works 4.0 install disks (2nd DL above). This one contains Disk 1 as a Read/Write disk image (plus the original Read Only disk image). - No matter tho', creating a floppy from the disk image is just as effective. I'm glad that you've been reunited with your good software.
If you ever need to create Read/Write images on a classic Mac OS from Read Only source, use Disk Copy 6.1 or newer (usually 6.3) and from its menus choose "Convert Image", then via its convert dialog, navigate to the image you want to modify and choose "Format: Read/Write" as the output, File Size (1.4MB or 800K floppy if they are floppy disk images), then Save As to a fresh copy, leaving the original intact.
@MikeTomTom, thanks for the lead. I downloaded the file you suggested and was able to install Mac Works 4.0. The only trick was that I had to create an actual floppy for install disk 1 because it needs to be writable. Maybe there's a way to mount an image as read/write but I didn't know how.
This program has sentimental significance to me. In the 90's I worked for a company that created a binary translator - a compiler where the input language is an executable for another machine. The most significant commercial application we did was Microsoft Works 4.0. The power PC version is a binary translation of the 68k version.
@dhayden: Yes this zipped archive does indeed appear to be useless on actual Mac hardware. They do mount as external disks in emulators. Unfortunately the archiver used ZIP compression and so its impossible to say what even was used to create the .dsk images it contains.
If using an emulator it is possible to convert the mounted images to some usable format for use on actual Mac hardware, with a little futzing around.
But to avoid having to do even that, I would be inclined to DL this Software Compilation CD which contains Works 4.0b as original Disk Copy 4.2 images. - CD 01 at the top of the list contains the US English versions.
I'll also add a more "Mac friendly" .sit archive to this page of Works 4 as DC-4.2 images, shortly.

I can't seem to mount the disk images or create copies. I tried DiskCopy 4.2, 6.3.3 and 7.0 on a PowerMac 7500 running MacOS 8.6. I also tried on a Macbook running OSX. There hdiutil says it doesn't recognize the file format. Anyone have any ideas?

TataMisia has removed my first upload so I decided to restore them straight from my MediaFire Archive. Please do not remove my file and link. However, this is for the classic Mac OS 7.0 to 8.6 and not the Classic Environment or Mac OS 9.0+.

still hoping for an answer to a previous question - why MS Works 3.0/68k seems to work fine in Classic (PowerBook G4/PPC & Tiger 10.4.11) but MS Works 4.0 crashes after launch - do I need to remove the 3.0 pref files? any ideas? anybody.....?
thanks for the files - works fine ... but can someone please explain to me why MS Works 3.0 fires right up in Classic mode (Tiger 10.4.11), but 4.0 freezes right after launch...? both are 68k architecture - both work in Mini vMac - is it a preference file issue or an installation issue (both were installed elsewhere and copied into the Classic folder)...makes no sense to me...and it's bizarre and discomforting to run 3.0 on my PowerBook and 4.0 thru the emulator
