Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition was unveiled at Macworld Expo/San Francisco on January 6, 1998. Office 98 was re-engineered by Microsoft's Macintosh Business Unit to satisfy customers' desire for more Mac-like software. It included drag–and-drop installation, self-repairing applications and Quick Thesaurus before such features were available in a version of Office for Windows. It also was the first version to support QuickTime movie. The applications in Microsoft Office 98 were:

* Microsoft Word 98

* Microsoft Excel 98

* Microsoft PowerPoint 98

Installer CD now uploaded

If you do have the Installer CD, feel free to delete my post.
An installer CD is always cleaner than a set of installed applications. Wink

I recall thats the way "installation" was done with Office98.
The needed folders were just dragged over from the CD and "setup" shuffeled things around.
I´m sure the German CD is in storage on the attic. I´ll have a look soon.

I moved the folder only to a freshly installed other machine and it worked just fine.
When you first open an application, it says something about setup, you have a progress bar and afterwards It opens and works fine.

Installed folder? That may let miss some parts needed to run the game application.

Thanks, mrdav. Really good of you to do this. It'll be great and very interesting having that floppy collection archived, too Smile

by mrdav - 2012, November 26 - 12:52am

@MikeTomTom: Ahh, I did not think to check the links. I have a copy of Office 4.2.1 (DiskCopy 4.2 images of floppies). I also have a copy from the relevant CD at the link I quoted below. I will upload Office 4.2.1 within the next 24 hours

@mrdav: Those MF links aren't active anymore, at least not for me. All I get on the links page is "The key you provided for file download was invalid. This is usually caused because the file is no longer stored on MediaFire. This occurs when the file is removed by the originating user or MediaFire". I only tried the 1st two links from the top down...

I also said below, re: Office 4.x, that Excel 4.0 was here. I think Excel 5 was in Office 4.x Sad

You can find it on one of the CDs here at

has someone uploaded a copy of Office 4.2.1?

Apparently not, so far. There are separate copies of MS Word 6 and Excel 4.0 tho'. which form the greater part of Office 4.x

I haven't tried either of these from here, so can't comment on their condition.

Yes, "something going wrong" in all services

by mrdav - 2012, November 25 - 12:19am

There is something going wrong at present. A number of pages have links, text and screenshots that are now disappeared. I hope an admin can fix soon. I suggest you wait until that happens.

by kosmro - 2012, November 25 - 12:06am

Sorry if this a stupid question, but where is the link? I can't seem to find it.

Also, has someone uploaded a copy of Office 4.2.1? Because I can't find my copy, and I didn't mind this version.

I'm glad to see this uploaded. The hard drive that crashed on me had 2001 one it, but I didn't have a lot of documents and simply wanted a small replacement that I could make presentations with. Thanks :3. (Plus, I love the year 98! XD)

Just I need one more request. Microsoft Office 98 also came with the Gold Edition, which include Microsoft FrontPage 1.0 and came in 5 CDs instead of one. Do you have it?

by Septim - 2010, May 30 - 5:33am

Could themacmeister please upload the marketing beta as I am very keen to get my hands on any Microsoft Office Macintosh Edition Beta.

There is a known crashing bug in Office 2001, this may not have been fixed, but there are workarounds available to avoid the error. These may be too much for some users, but Office 98 is immune to the problem, and SHOULD run well under Basillisk/SheepShaver (with enough memory set - maybe a little more).

PS. I have the Office 98 Marketing Beta, which is nearly identical to this version (for most purposes). Would it be necessary to post this? or is the final version the one that most people (not completists) want?

I use this v'98 and MS OFFICE 2001 in Sheepshaver and both work great,

and don't worry about your English,
also English is not my National language either, but this Forum is a good place to practice.

SheepShaver is more stable with MacOS 8.6

IIGS_User's picture
by IIGS_User - 2010, February 7 - 5:12pm

On sheepshaver every time that you try to save a file it crashes.

SheepShaver crashes all the time for me, if I press a key on the board.
I've no idea why, but it happens to me by inverting the bottom half of the emulated screen (all versions of SheepShaver I've used so far)...
