PackIt was considered the standard compression/archive format prior to the release of Compact Pro and StuffIt. While it is extremely rare to see any .pit files around these days, you never know when you might run into them.
The included disk image contains PackIt 1.0, Unpit 0.1, and PackIt III 1.3, the latter of which included DES encryption. Unpit was written by Thomas D. Newton in 1986.
