QuarkXpress had been the industry standard for desktop publishing for 10 years by the time version 4 was released. QuarkXpress version 4 brought into the program, interface improvements such as pop-up tools, tabbed dialog boxes and for the 1st time Bézier curve drawing tools, allowing the user to set type along an irregular path, or create clipping paths to make any image into a cut-out directly in QuarkXpress. The version 4.1 upgrade added support for PDF and XML.

Compatibility
Architecture: 68k PPC

QXP 4.0 can install as either FAT or native to PPC or 68k Macintosh

An issue (perhaps), on SheepShaver installs (QXP 4.11 only). Simply opening a document invokes a "Save Changes" dialog upon Quitting QXP 4.11 or closing the document, even when no changes have taken place. Any ideas why, or how to fix?

@themacmeister: If you have some time on your hands please upload. If you need to split the archive, please test it before uploading. You could post it to rapidshare . com, they've changed considerably over the past 2 months, you can now send up files of up to 500MB and you can also upload without registering (free rego anyway if you do). So 131MB is no problem.

There is no rush for this at my end, as its a busy few days ahead here and I wouldn't have the time to look at it anyway. Just keep it in mind.

Cheers for the season.

The install floppy for Quark 4.0 and Passport are Identical -- they just run a different install script off the CD. This wouldn't help in your case. Luckily, you can do a brand new install, that creates an Old System Folder, then you can copy important prefs and extensions over, and have an International English Australian MacOS9.x.x

I have just confirmed that doing a 9.0x/9.1 Universal Install of US version, then using the localised 9.2.1 and 9.2.2 updaters will give you a full IE localised 9.2.2.

@themacmeister: This does not work for me. Have tried a fresh FAT install onto my G4 running 9.2.2 International English (keyboard is set to Australian also). The result for me is the same as with all previous attempts I've made. No way can I input Australia as the country. I am given USA or Canada as my only choices. If I choose Canada I can enter a 4 digit postcode, but my details appear as someone living in Sydney NSW, Canada. - If I choose USA then I need to enter a 5 digit code and a longer phone number and as someone living in Sydney NSW, USA. - and I have no other choice, either opt out or carry on with the install.

On running the FAT install on this G4 without the dongle emulator, QXP gives this message:
"Hardware key not found. Please Shut Down Your Macintosh, install the correct hardware key, and run QuarkXpress Passport again. [5]" - Then exits to the Finder.

Using the supplied dongle emulator, it works on PPC Macs but fails to work on 68k... so I'm back to square one, really.

Now about that virgin QXP4.0 install CD you found Wink
Certainly, I am interested, but without an install floppy? That would be like being up the proverbial without a paddle, no?

I should probably do the sensible thing and wait for it to turn up on OZ eBay, I'm in no hurry.

Thanks all the same and a Merry Christmas to you, too.

I can't say this with enough emphasis -- I AM USING PASSPORT 4.0 WITHOUT A DONGLE!!!

My system shows up as US too (via Reg info in QXP). I tried a 68k install and it complained about a dongle - it didn't for the FAT and PPC versions...

I was also able to input Australia, and a 4 digit postcode, and correct phone no. ???!!!

DID you TRY the FAT install?

I don't know how you managed to get a US copy of the OS? I might be able to upload a copy of my System Folder -- if you think it will help... I used a G4 installer that came with a MDD G4, and do a Universal Install, then remove the crap I don't need. I believe there is a localised updater as well.

It must be your lucky day, as I just found a virgin QXP4.0 install CD, and it imaged correctly (131MB). If you are genuinely dying for a copy (without install floppy), I will split it in two and upload it for you!

PS. I found a copy of QXP 4.0 alpha18 -- where the hell did I get THAT from?!

PPS. Murry Chrustmus!

@themacmeister:

"My time zone is set to Sudney, Australia

You're typing with a Kiwi uccint Wink
My time zone is also Sudney, NSW ... altho' the OS is US. - I'll have to try install this onto a localized version of the OS.

I don't WANT Passport at all, it just happens to be the only virgin QXP 4 that I have to work with here. I would like very much a plain vanilla QXP 4 for 68k Mac, that being the last versions of QXP to run on that platform. I have 3.32 on 68k and its very good but 4.x introduced a few new (to Quark) typographical features, like text on a path so it could be good to have. Not that I have that much use for QXP, either Smile

I went to the Quark site for some info, found that support for version 4.1x ended in 2007 - 4.0 probably earlier. And that the dongle was for Passport only, introduced in versions 3 & 4 and that subsequent 5 & 6 Passport versions the dongle was dropped altogether.

Installing Passport onto a 68k Mac, it was slightly different than installing it onto a PPC, in that on 68k it would not allow me to enter a 4 digit postcode, it had to be 5 digits. Telephone numbers were also longer, it didn't mind that I put in NSW tho'.

I will have to try installing this onto PPC as a FAT binary and see how I fare.

Good helpful suggestions, thanks very much for your input.

Alright Mike, here is some interesting news...

Using the same package I posted, I installed the 68k, FAT, and PPC versions of QXP Passport 4.0 on my iBook (600MHz G3 384MB RAM). My time zone is set to Sudney, Australia, and I believe I am using 9.2.2z (The International English version of the OS -- It is the same version that is floating around the internet on two CDs, one with 9.04 boot CD, with a 9.2 installer, and another with the 9.2.2z update on it.

I tried many different dongle killers and dongle emus -- and they all stopped QXP PPT from working -- the weirdest thing was, that I did not need any of them in the first place.

(the 68k version did not finish the install script, so was unusable), but the FAT and PPC binary versions worked perfectly with NO DONGLE.

I think it is time you convinced your 68k machine that you are living in Sydney, Australia -- making sure to put 7304 as a postcode, and type NSW as a region.

Change the time zone in Date & Time, and select the AUS keyboard layout in control panels (it is identical to US really).

The 2 sections of the UTIL resource that hold the HASP KEY data are identical numbers (7,1000) to Presswise (which was why I was surprised that Presswise dongle emu did not work). You cannot change them one iota, or Quark says it is damaged, and refuses to launch.

I must admit that it seems that no version fully completed the install, but enough is installed to run perfectly. All the extra language files seem to be there -- and I created a few simple documents to test it -- it looks great!.

PS. I am unaware why you are so keen for Passport? It is identical to Quark 4.0 (I can find no differences except localised help files, and language file?

Also, not many people have passport, so if a document is damaged, ONLY passport can open/repair it (this is a major fault with passport). Also, I'm sure you can get a version (4.1.1) that does not require a hardware key.

Let me know, and I will upload my FAT install (11MB) and a screenshot of my reg info.

best of luck!

@themacmeister:

Perhaps "QuarkDongleKiller" might be a more apt name Sad
At least on QXP 4 it is. This patch was written for 3.x and it doesn't appear to be suitable for 4.
I first had to increase the memory for the patch app. After running it, it claims to have successfully applied the patch. However...
On Basilisk after patching, QXP crashes the emulation and the emulator's disk drives needed repair afterwards with Disk Tools. Tried on my 68k Mac and it was the same - QXP crashed the Mac, but the disk drives didn't need repairing... I haven't tried the patch on PPC or SheepShaver, wondering if I want to... maybe there's a later version for QXP 4, out there...

I installed it onto a real 68k Mac and the results were the same as with Basilisk II, no go with the supplied software dongle. No matter. Its good to know that version 4 will run on 68k Macs too, just got to sort that dongle issue out Wink
Will take a look at the installer as you suggested. Cheers.

PS. Use a control panel called Incognito (or In●cognito), which scrambles your QXP serial over the network, so you can run as many copies as you like!

I obtained that QXP4 in Australia. You may want to change your keyboard to AUS, and select a new home in Map control panel (or clock settings). This may fool QXP into working. You could also try an international english version of the OS, I believe they end in a lowercase 'z'

I'll rip through my backups, and find some more dongle emus, who knows, you might get lucky!

You could also check inside the installer with ResEdit, and maybe tweak a few settings (maybe copied from my 4.1.1 IE version) Smile to get the IE version to install. The IE version should be dongle free too!

@themacmeister: Thanks for the input[s] Wink

Tried the dongle from presswise - no go.
The installer for this QXP Passport is North American (USA & Canada), no International English option available.
The ebay dongle, US$25 (ouch). ADB and unlikely to work on a USB port Mac or emulator, at least not without another adapter (which I don't have). It costs more than I'd be prepared to part with on this.
The installer allows you to install fresh, a single license version of QXP. That is, the Installer floppy disk image is unwritten to and it allows you to install it using your own personal details.
The software dongle hack that accompanies the QXP CD image, refuses to work with QXP on 68k (Basilisk II) I haven't tried it on a real 68k Mac yet. I'll probably try that route next to see if I can eliminate emulator funkyness and because the extension appears to load at startup.
On SheepShaver, QXP quits each session after a minute or two complaining that no network is available! I have networking turned off in SheepShaver - but this puppy seems to be obsessed with having a network present and refuses to work without one. It times out after a couple of minutes waiting for a network.

Can't say that I've had quite as much trouble with previous or newer versions (5+) and I really like the 3.32 version on older Macs so am likely to stay with that earlier QXP.

There are versions of 4.x (4.1/4.11) that do not require dongles...??

Or you could nab one of these - http://cgi.ebay.com/Quark-Xpress-4-ADB-Dongle-DNGL-SUB-PP-XP-MAC-400-NLS...

Smile

EDIT: They "supposedly work" with iMate USB -> ADB adapter.

RE-EDIT: They are matched to a single licence of QXP 4, so would not work with yours Sad

PS. I fear it only needs a dongle for US English version. You could try International English -- we voted with our feet here in Australia, especially where DONGLES were concerned. No version of Quark I have used in Aus has ever been dongle protected.

PPS. The dongle emu in my upload of Presswise also works with other apps, may wish to try that?!

(I believe it is the Lightwave 5.5 Dongle Emu)

I have a collection of about 5 or 6 Dongle Emus -- I have found that experimentation is the key Smile

Archicad, Steinberg etc. They don't only work on the one app Smile Laughing out loud

@themacmeister:

Just noting that this also installs onto 68k Mac. The installer gives the choice of 68k, PPC and FAT. QXP 4 Passport installs onto Basilisk OK (I installed it onto Mac OS 7.6.1 & 8.1).

Major caveat: The supplied hardware dongle extension hack appears to be PPC only Sad

If there was a similar dongle extension for 68k, QXP 4 would likely work OK on 68k Mac, too.
