Almost from its inception in 1987, StuffIt became the standard tool for file compression on the Mac. By combining resource fork handling with compression, Raymond Lau gave Mac users a one-stop solution for archiving their files. Although StuffIt left its shareware roots after version 1.5.1, some form of StuffIt Expander has always been free and freely available.
Available DL's from the top down:
[Updated]:
Have removed virus from Stuffit 1.5.1 - it was in the Readme app (an executable doc) not in Stuffit itself.
Have also split the original download into separate components (as per IIGS_User's request) for easier access to the version you need.
The file "STUFFIT551_CD.SIT" is a compressed StuffIt archive containing a ".toast" image file of StuffIt Deluxe 5.5.1 CD-ROM. The StuffIt Deluxe 5.5 CD-ROM contains various non-Aladdin software (ACTION Files 1.5.2, AportisDoc Mobile, AportisDoc Reader, BrainForest Mobile, Gravity Simulator, Groovysoft Software, Acrobat Reader 4, BBEdit 5.1.1 Demo, Internet Explorer 5, Josh's Apple Game, On Guard 3.3.1, Tex-Edit 2.7.2, Biggy Demo, FontAgent 8, Snitch 2.6.5, and Tex-Edit Plus 3.0.1), Aladdin products goodies (GoBar 2.2, HotTime 1.3, InstallerMaker 6.5.2, DropStuff 5.5, Expander 5.5, Tuner 3.0, Desktop Magician 1.0.1, DragStrip 3.7.1, FlashBack 1.130, MacTicker 1.6.3, IntelliNews 2.0.1, MacHeadlines Pro 1.9.1, MacHeadlines Lite 1.9.1, ShrinkWarp 3.5.1, Sundial 3.0 Demo, and WeatherTracker 3.0.6), StuffIt Deluxe 5.5 installer and StuffIt Deluxe 5.5.1 updater.
CompatibilityVersion 1.5.1 - 4.x runs well within vMac and Mac OS 6 and 7.
Version 5.0 - 5.5.x runs on 68020 or newer CPU, SSW 7.1 or later.
Version 6.0.x runs on PowerPC CPUs only, Mac OS 8.1 or later.
Version 6.5.x requires Mac OS 8.6 or later.
Version 7.0.3 (Classic) requires Mac OS 8.6 to 9.2.2
See Also: If seeking the PPC OS X native version of Stuffit Expander & DropStuff version 7.0.3, visit the "StuffIt Standard Edition 7.0.3" page. Its not the full Deluxe suite, but it can be used to compress and extract Stuffit archives on PPC OS X. It has installers for Classic, OS X and Windows PC's.
Comments
Sorry if i am missing something but is there any other reason that we don't have Stuffit 6 besides the "Never install Stuffit Deluxe 6; this is total and dangerous crap" comment in the middle of the page?
I have uploaded zipped toast images from the Old Mac Archive which are suitable for bootstrapping an emulator.
The preexisting .sit files are not useful unless you already have copy of Stuffit Expander or Deluxe. A chicken & egg problem.
W-T-F are all those downloads above?? =>NEVER mind--what a mess this page is.
Btw, StuffIt Deluxe 5 is of limited use as i don't believe it will open/view files compressed with the newer StuffIt 7. Might open them if you specified older compression.
I have DropStuff 3.5, StuffIt Expander 4.0, and StuffIt Expander/DropStuff 5.5 installed in my system disk image which I use with multiple emulators. Before I installed DropStuff 5.5, I used HFVExplorer to rename the "StuffIt Engine" which is part of DropStuff 3.5 to "StuffIt Engine 3.5" (not the Finder to rename it because this "StuffIt Engine" is installed "name-locked", preventing renaming of it in the Finder), and when I want to use DropStuff 3.5, I rename the "StuffIt Engine" and "StuffIt Engine PowerPlug" which are part of DropStuff 5.5 to "StuffIt Engine 5.5" and "StuffIt Engine 5.5 PowerPlug" and rename "StuffIt Engine 3.5" to "StuffIt Engine"
Because it also includes the DropStuff installer (and serial), making it a far more useful addition than the straight 5.5 install on the page you linked to. That page is for those who need an accessible Stuffit Expander 5.5 for any situation, yesterday.
Please do not take it upon yourself to remove the Stuffit Expander 5.5 from this page like the original zipped archive you removed from the page you linked to. That was not a nice way to go about it. You should have added your files to the page as additions, not removed what was already there (for good reason).
Why is StuffIt Expander 5.5 here in StuffIt format when it could have been available in formats meant for people who really need it (and now is at http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/stuffit-expander-55 in RAW 1.4MB HFS disk image and MacBinary I formats)?
Wow!
That true, xy.

Very true; only those intermediate updates of a version should be uploaded here which, for some reason, might be- instead of the latest update of a version - of use for some people, especially since intermediate updates are often no good or buggy which is the reason why they have been updated in the first place!
Here are definitions of a couple of words I would like people to think about before uploading to the site:
Quantity-- an indefinite amount or number
Quality-- a peculiar and essential character, a degree of excellence, a superiority in kind
I have the collection of StuffIt items. Will be uploaded later:
- StuffIt Deluxe Updaters (3.0.2, 3.0.3, 3.0.5, 3.0.6 Comp Update, 3.0.7, 3.5.1, 4.0.1, 5.0.2, 5.1.5, 5.5.1, 6.5.1)

Edit: I've downloaded the StuffIt Deluxe 5.5 CD from Pandora. Inside this CD has various non-Aladdin software (ACTION Files 1.5.2, AportisDoc Mobile, AportisDoc Reader, BrainForest Mobile, Gravity Simulator, Groovysoft Software, Acrobat Reader 4, BBEdit 5.1.1 Demo, Internet Explorer 5, Josh's Apple Game, On Guard 3.3.1, Tex-Edit 2.7.2, Biggy Demo, FontAgent 8, Snitch 2.6.5, and Tex-Edit Plus 3.0.1) and Aladdin products goodies (GoBar 2.2, HotTime 1.3, InstallerMaker 6.5.2, DropStuff 5.5, Expander 5.5, Tuner 3.0, Desktop Magician 1.0.1, DragStrip 3.7.1, FlashBack 1.130, MacTicker 1.6.3, IntelliNews 2.0.1, MacHeadlines Pro 1.9.1, MacHeadlines Lite 1.9.1, ShrinkWarp 3.5.1, Sundial 3.0 Demo, and WeatherTracker 3.0.6) including the installer of StuffIt Deluxe itself and StuffIt Deluxe 5.5.1 updater. Found old links for Stuffit 1.5.x. These are binhex so if you're using a Mozilla-based browser, right-click on the links to avoid corruption.

Tested with Disinfectant.
If someone is doing so, could you please upload separate files to this page for each version of Stuffit?
Can someone Disinfect Stuffit 1.5.1 (use Disinfectant) and reupload? Thanks! The nVir A virus probably won't become abandonware -- even its source code is available.
I can confirm MCPs suggestion: I have Stuffit Deluxe 7, 5 and 4 as well as Stuffit Light 3.6 and Stuffit 1.5 on Mac OS 9.2.2. And I have had to be very careful about this. Stuffit Deluxe 7 is quite independent. The installer of Stuffit 5, however, overwrites older Stuffit Engines, kicks out things that are necessary for Stuffit 4, and the like. Also, there seems to be a conflict between the Preferences of DropStuff 7, 5 and 4. Further, it always helps to disable or uninstall the Menu Items control panel; especially in Stuffit 7 this tool is no good.
Never install Stuffit Deluxe 6; this is total and dangerous crap.
MCP, thanks for that input. I did a Finder search and removed everything Stuffit 5x before installing my own personal copy of SD 3.5. However I didn't search for hidden files in the System Folder. I'll take a look.
If you've had multiple versions of StuffIt on your System, there may be remaining files in the System Folder that are conflicting with each other. In fact, since you mention the mysterious expiration, I'm sure of it.
I tend to just use the DropStuff apps that come bundled with MacOS.
I've had very limited success with Stuffit Deluxe 5.5 from this download. It seems to stop working after a certain time (is it the S/N?), or something gets corrupted, but anyhow I've had to install it 5 times now and I am DONE with this. I'm using 7.6.1 on a PPC.
I've gone back to my original Stuffit Deluxe 3.5 from my personal, simple two 800K floppies that don't have the "Stuffit Finder" and "Stuffit Browser" and "Secure Delete" and all the other bloated junk that 5.5 offers. I hate Stuffit 5.5 with a passion.
I remember my first Stuffit upload which was wrapped into a .cdr.zip file. But by other uploaders this file has been removed in the meanwhile, for some reasons.
Thanks for the link.
I wonder if a list of links can be added somewhere on the Mac Garden site, like "essential Mac software links" for users who are getting older systems running? Would be pretty useful. I mean, a fairly prominent link at the top right navigation, for example, perhaps called "essentials"
www.mediafire.com/oldmacarchive
Look in the Essentials folder, there's lots of download options there. And don't be too harsh on what's available on the Mac Garden; there are many different users with different needs.
Wow, the Stuffit program stored in a stuffit archive! Isn't that genius! How is someone supposed to get Stuffit Expander from the net without already having it???
I posted the link after his/her post.
Hey Hatta, is there a reason why you haven't used the mirror link above?
No peers :/. Can someone help?
Some users have reported a copy/paste bug in the emulator. Try typing the serial number out manually.
I just tried installing Stuffit Deluxe 5 (in the 5.1.5 image) on OS 8.1 in Basilisk II. The installer wouldn't accept the serial number when I copied and pasted it.
The versions 3.5 of StuffIt, UnstuffIt and the related drop-apps
as DropZip worked fine on Mac OS 7 machines...
Edit: Replaced 'xxx7' with 'Mac OS 7' - IIGS User
I added in StuffIt 1.5.1, as it's sort of a milestone in StuffIt history. I did not BIN the new archive, I'm not sure why it was like that.
Well. It's done for Me via Mac OS 7.1, when installing StuffIt 5.5 installer then the program works fine at all.
Edit: Replaced 'xxx7' with 'Mac OS 7' - IIGS User
I've added to the archive that 5.5 version that was uploaded separately, as well as a 5.5.1 updater I found.
Pretty handy, once you've disabled the extensions it likes to apply. Though I'm thankful we live in the age of disk images and .zip files now.
Here are all the comments from the old page. Couldn't find a good way to preserve them exactly.

I believe Toast 5 can handle .iso format. I'm not totally sure though.

by Attila - Mon, 04/27/2009 - 12:57
Sorry I should be more specific. I mean the .cdr / .iso format. I'll have to monkey with it when I go home later. I know what works for old macs, I'm just wondering if there's something easier for both old macs and newer pc's/macs. If OS 9 could read that .iso format...

Your upload is OK for your 10.2.8 system, I think. It worked also with my G4/10.4.11.

by Attila - Mon, 04/27/2009 - 12:45
I have OS 10.2.8 on my G3 iMac; is this a format I can make or recognize with that? I barely use OSX, so it's all new to me. I'm all for making things easy for everybody with newer computers, just so long as I can use the old ones, too. Looking at Wikipedia about it now...

Thanks, Attila, a very good collection of old Stuffit applications, arranged to be used in the well-known Macintosh emulators (Mini-vMac, Basilisk and SheepShaver).
About the .cdr format, how to unstuff the files without having Stuffit Expander handy on local hard disk (even on host or emulated system)? That was the reason I've upload it as .cdr before.
If the "multiple versions of a game download" comes up here, I will re-arrange an optional .cdr image again, preformatted to be used in emulators.
--
by Attila - Mon, 04/27/2009 - 11:34
My thoughts exactly, though I'm not sure about the .cdr extension. I don't use the emulators...I only have old macs! I made it all into a Disk Copy image; hopefully that will work easily enough. Anyway here's StuffIt Deluxe 4.0 with serial, 5.0 with serial and updaters, and DropStuff/Expander 5.5, and they use the serials from 5.0.

Full version would be great, with this download I feel disturbed about the Shareware window that pops up every time I want to DropStuff something.
If you could, please put together full versions of Stuffit Expander/DropStuff 5.5 into one zipped .cdr file (most Stuffit Expander downloads needs to be unstuffed with another Stuffit Expander version first, this game entry prevents that).
Because 5.5 runs on Mac OS 7.1.1 or newer only, we could also need another application entry with full version of 4.0 (if possible) or so which runs in System 6.
In the meanwhile, I found a Stuffit Installer for 4.0 (Expander/DropStuff) and DropStuff 5.5 (which I requested before), but they are all unregistered.
Ironically, I found the english DropStuff 5.5 inside my SheepShaver installation, but it's still unregistered.

I've got a load of StuffIt stuff, including full versions. Probably some not abandonware, though. I'll see what I can upload this week.

by IIGS_User - Sat, 04/25/2009 - 13:10
Anyone have DropStuff 5.5 in english handy? I found a german version somewhere, but no english version, and all download links I found are dead or are linking to SmithMicro, where older versions than 7.0 has been removed.
http://galileo.asd20.org/downloads/ilister.php?type=mac
That needs 5.5, because 6.0 or newer versions of Stuffit are PowerPC only, which will not run in Basilisk.

When uploading files stuffed with this version of Dropstuff, sometimes the upload will canceled with the msg "The selected file Your_File_Name.sit could not be uploaded. The file contents (application/octet-stream) do not match its extension (sit).", or will take too long time without any responses.
