UnderWare 2.0
A really nice interactive screen saver. It has animated desktop too. You can see dinosaurs walking in the desktop while you're working, watch trees grow, etc. Visit the UnderWare 1.0.1 page for an earlier version. Also see "Kids World", an UnderWare compatible Screen Saver construction set by Bit Jugglers.
The UnderWare 2.0 DL above contains the 2.0 installer plus 2.0.1 updater
A couple notes to help you get the most out of Under Ware
- MOST IMPORTANT -- Please be sure to run the included 2.0.1 updater FIRST! You are likely to have problems with the cursor disappearing if you don't
- The Desktop Animation feature is the best part and is enabled by default, but you may need to fine tune a couple things to get it working 100% smoothly. If it runs choppy when desktop animation is on, try any of the following:
- Adjust the size of the invisible "window" that displays the animations on the desktop from "full screen" to a lower size
- Adjust the "Tile" menu (if not using "full screen" mode)...this works like "tiling" of a normal desktop pattern
- Choosing "Fill Screen" under "Tile" achieves almost the same look as real "Full Screen" mode, but with lower CPU usage (best for slower machines)
- Check the "256 Colors Max" box (doesn't negatively effect appearance much)
- Disabling "Play Sounds On Desktop" is recommend both for resource use and irritation purposes
- Resources required depend on the selected module -- choosing another often increases performance
- The desktop animation feature might have minor (harmless) conflicts with other extensions -- if you notice anything off with any other extensions, etc after installing, disabling it should allow you to continue using Under Ware as a screen saver without interacting negatively with other software
- Note if desktop animations do cause problems, disabling them in the control panel should resolve it -- you shouldn't need to actually remove the Under Ware INIT and CDEV (preventing you from using it at all)
- Completely disable ALL other screen saver software
- Look for the clever use of your real desktop icons as props in many of the modules (another feature [almost] exclusive to Under Ware)
- It can also run most After Dark v2.0 modules (possibly > v2.0 but unconfirmed) but only as screen savers (unfortunately not as desktop animations)
Operating System Support
- Mac OS 7.1 to 7.6.1 works perfectly (sorry System 6)
- OS 8.1 compatibility has been confirmed (later OS 8 versions should be fine too)
- OS 9 (< 9.2.2) compatibility has not yet been confirmed. See note regarding 9.2.2 below (someone please test OS 9 & report outcome here)
- OS 9.2.2 has unfortunately been reported to have issues with UnderWare -- though it did technically run (opposed to not even starting like un-patched After Dark did on 9.2.2), so it may be worth playing with (need additional feedback here)
- Runs great on PowerPC or 68k (but 68020 LC untested)
- Works great in Sheep Shaver (support for other modern emulators is likely but unconfirmed)
- Basilisk II compatibility also reported
If anyone has any questions or problems running it, please post in the forum so we can document the issue and solution.
MOST IMPORTANT: JUST TRY IT OUT AND HAVE FUN!
It's completely safe, these notes are just meant to help those who may have minor issues.

Comments
@rlawson Thank you!
Everyone else, we still need someone to test and report compatibility for OS 9 (< 9.2.2)
I'm hoping < 9.2.2 will work, like After Dark does (without needing the "patched" version).
Of those who have tried it so far, who thinks it exceeds all the "hype" you heard about it?
I know I do, in fact it's even cooler then I thought it'd be!
Sure the specific version I tried it on was 9.2.2
@rlawson: Would you mind telling us the specific version number of OS 9 (eg 9.2.2) you had problems running this on so I can be specific above?
Thanks for the feedback guys, I'll continue to update the information above as more is provided.
Tried it on my clamshell ibook with OS 9 and no luck. Graphical glitches, machine ran very slow then locked up.
The screenshots above were taken on Basilisk II running SSW 7.1.1 and on a Centris 660av, also running SSW 7.1.1 - Just to confirm that UnderWare 2.x works great in Basilisk II, too.
This is great. Downloaded and installed on my IIsi running 7.0.1. Good times. I didn't realize it had wallpapers, and screen savers in addition to desktop animations. Thanks.
BRILLIANT! THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Putting this on my dropbox so this doesn't get lost again
.
Oh god no don't think that! It's perfectly fine, it's not going to do any harm to anyone's computer! I just had to tweak a few things with it myself to get it working exactly right (at least to my standards). I just wanted to point a few things out so if others have problems they will mess with it a little and not give up.
I'm going to change the wording. I think you do have a point, maybe I worded this a little too strong.
You guys let me know if it's still too "intimidating" after I tone it down.
But please don't be afraid to use it everyone! It's absolutely great and not dangerous or anything!
So many "warnings" of important notes that now, I`m almost afraid to use it.
Thanks again to Macjames for bringing this near lost and awesome application to everyone!
AWESOME!
Added screenshots. With thanks to macjames for adding this incredibly rare software to the Mac Garden archives.
