Hi everybody!
I hope this is the right place to ask this. I have a real (non-emulated) Mac OS 9.2 running on a Pismo (FireWire, G3 500 MHz) PowerBook. It wasn't used since 2003 or so, but the OS with apps and extensions and everything was still there. It works really well, but I have noticed a very annoying issue - the display gets reset to 256 colors, and the Control Strip gets disabled (only the control strip itself, not the extension!) after every reboot. Probably some other settings get lost as well, but I haven't figured out yet if this is the case.
One suggestion I got was to check it with the extensions, there are supposedly many apps out there designed to detect and/or solve any incompatibilities between them. I have had no luck so far figuring out how to fix this issue, and I also don't know any of the apps to fix this. Can anybody of you help me?

Is the System Date reset ? or is it connected to the Internet at boot ?
Date, Boot disk, Monitor bit depth are just some of the details stored in the PRAM. And if the PRAM battery is dead - almost certain in a Mac of that age unless it's spent nearly all this time connected to power - then you lose all those settings.
But don't think Control Strip should be affected by that. I'm sure it has it's own settings that get used when the Mac boots and sees the extension is active. BUT, I've seen it happen to me before too, can't remember the cause or what I did to fix it, but there was no dead PRAM battery involved.
Once you turn the Control Strip back on and fix the monitor bit depth, make sure you do a clean restart immediately. A failed shutdown or forced restart might have left some preferences files damaged causing the situation you are seeing.

Also owning this Pismo, installed plain 9.2, Panther & Tiger, each on different partitions.

Like virus check applications, they'll disturb together, I believe. Use one incompatibility detection software only.
If it isn't used for long time, probably its internal battery is empty. Asks your book for date & time after booting up?
I, personally, have the Pismo book connected to power supply all the time, even if not used, because otherwise its internal battery will be emptied at some point and my Pismo book can't be booted anymore. Was some tricky to re-animate its battery to use that book again.

Two recommendations off the bat - rebuild the desktop, replace PRAM battery (or just reset PRAM to start with).
To rebuild the desktop hold option & command when Finder is opening upon bootup (after the extensions are done loading).

@bertyboy and IIGS_User - the system date is fine, and Internet connection is via the AirPort card - likely from the boot. I see what you mean, but I think the bit depth and the Control Strip are the only reset options. Might go for the battery replacement though, if all else fails.
Sorry for causing confusion regarding incompatibility detection software. I want only one of those apps, I was just asking for any recommendation on which one (if any) to use. I don't know a single one, because my experience with classic Mac OS isn't that, umm, deep.
@amatecha - will try the desktop rebuilding right ahead, assuming there is no risk of losing any data... is there any?

There isn't any risk to rebuilding the desktop file(that i now of 
)
Press Command(the key with the apple and
clover on it) and option at the same time while starting up(don't let go of those keys until rebuild desktop windows comes up)
Conflict Catcher is a great extension conflict catcher.

There is no risk doing so - this is a very useful task keeping the system clean, especially after deleting and/or installing games/applications.
