Would anyone know of any USB or 400 firewire AV capture device that's compatible with any OS 9 software?

The only capture device I ever used on laptops was the Irez Capsure PCMCIA card for Powerbook G3s (Wallstreet, Lombard, Pismo).
For G4 PCI based machines there was the Igniter Series of PCI cards.
I believe the early colored iMacs came with a USB interface that could be used with Avid Videoshop? But most USB-Video interfaces in the 90s were USB 2.0 which meant PC only.

What are you trying to transfer? Protected VHS (ie Disney)?
Home VHS? Camcorder?
What is the frame resolution?
If it is unprotected VHS Panasonic made VHS/DVD combo players with one button transfer from VHS to either DVD-RAM or DVR.
If you have a firewire port you should be able to use a camcorder that has firewire output with iMovie or iMovie 2.
I use iMovie v2.1.2 as the capture software. BTV Pro works nicely as well as does Final Cut Pro v3.0.
Using Firewire 400 I've successfully captured video from DVDs, Live TV, Laserdisc, and Set top boxes from Streaming and cable sources.
I've tried products from
Canopus
Datavideo
Dazzle
Avid
All worked but only the Canopus and Datavideo worked flawlessly.
When looking for a product, just look for the ability to transfer video from and to FireWire 400 ports.
No drivers are required if you use one of the software products I listed above to capture video.

Ok thanks I'll try that. I'm trying to record gameplay from very old game consoles and computers like the Atari 2600 for example.
As long as your device has a "Video Out" connector, you will be able to capture whatever the device is sending to that port.
