"Chunky" sound in Mac OS 9

A few of my games (Harry the Handsome Executive, SimCity Classic) and some MIDIs on my hard drive in Mac OS 9.2 run absolutely terribly and chunky...reminds me of the days when I played CD-ROM games on the Performa when RAM Doubler was on. Other games with sound run fine, however.

My cousin says the version of QuickTime Instruments is incompatible with the software, and I've played around with the extensions for QT, but it seems to do no good. Anyone have the same problem?

Also please note that my copy of SCC was downloaded a few years ago and is the semi-updated version with the new graphics pack. Has it been patched?

Are you running OS 9 on a real classic Mac, or an emulator?

If the former, is virtual memory on? Turning it off will improve performance.

Other than that, I'm not sure. Try checking your sound extension versions. I have Sound Manager 3.7.1, Apple Audio Extension 1.0.4, and QuickTime 6.0.3.

Under sheep shaver sound stutters a lot, tried everything no dice. Find it easier to use a real mac, no problems there. If not... Try RAM replacements, reinstalling the system or installing a new HD.

It's a real OS 9 computer. Virtual memory may be the culprit, AGAIN, and if I turn off VM I might have more disk space...

Nope, virtual memory was off. The last hope is that somewhere in the past, the disk was partitioned, with an absurdly small space for OS 9. A lot of things still don't work after a partial upgrade, and I hope that everything is cleared up this holiday season.
