Copland, Rhapsody, other betas - Real Mac vs. Emulation ?

Best bet for playing with some of the beta / non-released Apple OSes?

I have a G3 400MHz w/ OS 9 and I just got my G4 533MHz w/ OS 9 & 10.4 running. I could also run Sheepshaver, or whatever is the best emulator for the particular OS in my Intel Hackintosh.

Anybody have experience with the beta operating systems? I know you cannot do too much with them compared to OS 9 but would be fun to test out.

You want a PCI Power Mac for Copland (D11E4) and Rhapsody. My 7500 is a good fit for these (once I replaced the CPU with a 604). Plus you can also run BeOS on it which is nice.

For Copland D7E1 a 6100/66 and 8100/80 are known to work. It fails to boot on my 6100/60 so either there's something wrong with it (which I can't find with diagnostic software) or it's just not supported. Unless you have one or can get one cheap it's probably not worth it as there's nothing much else of interest that you can run on a 601 (or Copland itself for that matter).

Emulation is out. Sheepshaver is lacking in too many areas and nobody seems to be trying to fill those in.

Crap, I was hoping it would work in the emulators or on my machines : (

Quick look at eBay shows it would be at least $150+ USD for a 6100/66. I think that money could be better used pimping out my Power Mac G4. I actually have a boxed Win/Mac Be OS 5 (stickers even) that I had running on an old PC. Now I have Haiku in my triple boot laptop.

You should be able to get a 6100 for less than that with some hunting. If you're in the US try Craigslist.

For D7E1 you also need a second Mac (with a serial port) to run the debugger. Unlike D11E4, it won't boot without one.

As an update I found out that the reason D7E1 was failing on my 6100/60 was my Extended II keyboard. For some reason it just didn't like it. Once I swapped it for a Keyboard II it worked fine.

I was working on an iMovie plugin at the time the first X betas were released to Developers. I loaded one of them onto a powerbook that was NOT my regular development machine.

There was no way to back up my work at the time as most peripheral devices weren't implemented yet.

I worked for a couple of weeks on the severely bug ridden Carbon environment trying to port my plugin to X. Then the machine had a kernel panic. So did I. I called Developer Tech Support to help me recover from the damage. There advice was:
Reformat the disk and start again.

I did. A week later the same thing happened. I reformatted. 5 days later ...

This time I put X on the shelf where it remained until Jaguar shipped.

I am in the US, I guess I will need to keep an eye out for one on Cragslist, eBay and Goodwill stores. Maybe I can even trade for the iMac I have, since my G4 is working nicely now. Its easier to have it right next to my Hackintosh and just switch cables.

Everybody has horror stories with new applications or OSes and lost work. Mine were mostly about about term papers! I always found Jaguar kinda sluggish, I was really happy when Panther rolled around.
