can someone please tell me the best application for measuring disk speed throughput in MB/s?
im trying to gauge the performance of my 32bit/33mhz Acard 6890M hardware raid controller (2 x Sata150) but im not sure which application to try to find to accomplish this

Helios LANTest. Despite its name it can be used to benchmark every volume. The advantage is that is keeps consistent / reproducable valid values over years and version. Its typical use is to benchmarks big file servers over Gigabit or 10 Gigabit Ethernet. Just switch off “print”, select the desired speed (for local disks: “very fast networks”) and go.
It is available for Mac OS 8/9 PowerPC, for early OS X and for the newest release for Intel.
User name: tools
Pass: tools
→ Helios Tools, Helios LANTest, then select the desired version

I tried the link but nothing happens when I press the button on their first screen.
Is this a local app or a cloud service?

Is is a native Mac OS 9 or OS X program, whatever you like.
The website works fine for me with Safari 7 and Firefox 28. It serves as a download place for the native program, no web services involved.
