Doom II Mac Classic LAN setup

Hey Mac garden (this site is wonderful first of all!!)
I know that playing doom online in os x is a synch nowadays with zandronum and doomseeker but- For nostalgia's sake, I want to set up a classic doom II LAN. I have bunch of iMacs running Mac os9, a 16 port ethernet switch and of course, a legit doom 2 CDROM. Everything installed successfully including the MacIPX control panel. What's next? There's no multiplayer option in the original menus, and no setup.exe like on the windows version. Is this not possible with the passing of gaming networks like Kali.net or dwango? Shouldn't there be a way to do a local LAN game under the classic Mac OS?

(And since we're on the classic LAN gaming topic, how about duke 3d? Any other 1996 and younger classics I should & could run with this setup??)

Hold the "m" key as the game starts and a multiplayer menu will pop up. The only way i've tried was through appletalk and just between 2 macs. It was really easy but required (I think) a crossover ethernet cable. There is an option for IPX on the menu. Let us know how it works. Duke is awesome multiplayer as is Shadow Warrior and Marathon but the best, to me, is Quake (if your old macs can run it)

Yes, tho' for more than 2 players, a standard ethernet network was required (crossover was for 2 connected Macs only). IPX was for (cross) connecting to earlier Window's networks and after Win 95, TCP/IP became a better choice cross-platform (for DooM 1 & II). Above 4 players, on a LAN it was stretching things towards the unplayable and outside from a LAN... don't go there.

Duke, Shadow Warrior & Quake, yes, yes, yes. - I really love Shadow Warrior.

Even though I've long been a Mac fan. I have never enjoyed Marathon. even tho' it has pure Mac origins. Sacrilegious, I know... even so, I'm glad that its still available for all, as a free open source and has the Aleph One project keeping it alive.

thank you guys! the setup worked, but once the two macs found each other, something in the initialization process didn't work, and the game wouldnt start; i'll post a picture soon. Marathon, I love,and already got running, so I must get a copy of os classic shadow warrior and duke; im sure it'd be a blast
