File hoster Rapidshare has become unusable for Macintosh Garden !

The new Rapidshare (they have changed policy and user interface Friday, the 09/13/2013 (!)) has become useless for file sharing purposes.

Reasons:
• they limited guest user traffic to a maximum of 6 kB/s
(that means you need more than 6 hours for a 100 MB file !!)
• even if you pay for being a registered premium user you are limited in speed and maximum download traffic if you are not the uploader !
• they seem to become more restrictive; there are reports that they take massively uploads down.

Conclusion for Macintosh Garden:
• file hosting on rapidshare has become mostly useless for archival purposes (so do not use this file hoster anymore !)
change to a more reliable file hoster (long hosting times, fast download speed for guest users)
(so far used on Macintosh Garden: MEGA, mediafire, 4shared.com, dropbox, sendspace)
migrate all files hosted on rapidshare to another file hosters.

So much for the "we promise this downtime will be to your benefit" I kept getting from them yesterday. I vote mediafire... 4shared is almost useless on my line for some reason.

Uh oh... doesn't sound too good for RS.

Think of the tons of uploads MF dropped already. MCP, Sheepy...
If you go for MF name the files "Mothers last Birthday.avi" or so.

RS has revamped their interface.Presumably that is why they had some downtime...but they did not seem to be down for very long. It is still working just fine for my purposes and I plan to keep using it. I regard my collection as an archival alternative to the ones on MG which are "archived but unavailable" At least mine are "available".

Keeping this site going is like living on a rainy beach in a sandcastle...

they limited guest user traffic to a maximum of 6 kB/s

Rapidshare: The Anti-Rapid Company

If you go for MF name the files "Mothers last Birthday.avi" or so.

With the kind of resources at these corporations' disposal, it would probably be trivial to scan all uploads' content for file formats that don't match extensions (eg. a zipped ISO posing as an AVI), and red-flag them for review or delete them at once. Puzzled

Yes, a fake extension would be too trivial. Smile
I just wanted to point to the (known) fact, that bulldogs are scanning the filenames and make MF delete them. In the past the third "suspect" name would let MF delete your whole collection without notice.
I had to learn that the hard way.

I´m not going to re-upload anything seriously until a working internal server for MG is found.
As I workaround I´m using Ubuntu One meanwhile (5GB free storage).

I afraid the restrictions mentioned in the above post are not temporary Sad
(I am a registered user and I am still getting a 6 KB/s download rate, in their new FAQ they are saying guests are limited to 30 KB/s, registered user unlimited, but that is not the truth if you are not the uploader of the file you are downloading).
Rapidshare wants to change from open file-hoster to a closed cloud-based personal backup service, the same way that filesonic.com went until they went offline shortly after.
Rapidshare has lost a big legal proceeding at the German highest court BGH (article, original article) and had a massive layoff of 80% of its employees (article, original article).

So the end of Rapidshare might not far if you consider what happened to all the other file hosters that turned to cloud-based backup services !

So it would be good to look for an alternative place for the files now when the files are still accessable for the original uploaders at full speed.
Consider at least to upload to an mirror and to mirror all existing files to another external file hosters.

recently uploads to rapidshare:

Reader Rabbit Preschool: Sparkle Star Rescue!
Reader Rabbit's Reading Development Library 1
Reader Rabbit Toddler
You Don't Know Jack Sports
Interaktive Lernhilfe

Please could someone mirror them to another server, please ?

annother one bites the dust.

Using mediafire is even worse, i lost my entire account with no notice (despite their claims i had ignored warnings, i just came home one day to a email saying my account was suspended) so did sheep and MCP

4shared is my current favourite, however you need a account to download form them don't you?

I'll download all those linked above and stick them on the http portion of my server (with no speed limits)

That is a good idea, if someone is prepared to re-mirror the files I make available on my RS account. While I still have the paid account I will use it. However, if RS finally makes guest downloads unavailable completely, I will look for alternatives, but moving over 250GB of files is not something I want to do, so alternative mirroring in advance is a very good idea.

That's too intensive. Rapidshare is getting worse in the future.
I will mirror these items by downloading it (hense i have 5Mbps internet) and then mirror it to max1zzz's server. For smaller files, I will use Google drive.

BTW, only registered users of Rapidshare can download files.

I still like 4Shared. With a free, no-nonsense membership, you can download 5+ files at once at full speed. I use this method constantly with FPS Legends/Adventure Legends downloads (PS. there are a few mac titles uploaded there too). Makes getting split CD images a breeze. Worth at least a few test files.

Yes, I use 4Shared a lot too for just the same reasons, but I have never uploaded anything there. I might investigate it as a potential location for future uploads in view of the likelihood of more undesirable developments at RS.

Thank you, sheepmyshaver123 and max1zzz's for mirroring the files.
Your work is appreciated much ! Laughing out loud

Sure it's not easy if you already have uploaded a 250 GB file collection on rapidshare. But if the hoster goes down, everything is lost ! Good example: megaupload.com, there was many huge files her on MG hosted on that server and everything was gone when the server suddenly shut down. And it took more than a year to restore all the links (find someone who had still the file in his backup, reupload to another server; very much work !) and work is still in progress up to now !
So you are in a better position if you look now for an alternative server and start to migrate to that server, the earlier the better !

Sorry for making so much noise in here, but after all these file disasters the last years (EA threat, megaupload gone, mediafire deletion) i have become more cautious about this.

The very best solution would be to use an private server holding all files as a backup and distributing them to a fast hoster for the users to download the files. So you could have always a copy available and could easily restore them if one hoster disappears. But the size of MG's file collection might make it hard to set up such a server if the hard disk size does not rise again in a not too far future.

What hosters would you prefer as a replace for rapidshare ? Please send your feedback ! Laughing out loud

I am still getting a lot of downloads of my RS files even though the D/L rate is very low, so I think I will persist with RS for the time being. I guess this will not be popular for some, but that is my choice. Others can always start making alternative links, as has already started. Think of it this way...if I just made a list of links without making pages, I suspect some people might be just pleased to have some access (albeit slow) to the files at all, and if the D/L was not important enough to them then they just not bother.

So far as placing the 250GB elsewhere, yes, a private server is the best but not everyone has access to an ISP that will allow that as a practical option. An alternative to house the 250 GB of files on an "ongoing basis" has to be paid for, and someone has to copy them over. I have paid once and copied once, and I won't be doing it again for that 250GB. I do have copies of all the files... but then so do a whole lot of others who have downloaded copiously over the time. Kitchen2010, are you planning to host the files? That would be a great service to our community, and you obviously have strong feelings about the looming RS situation.

If anyone wants a private server to backup their files on, email me, i don't mind giving large amounts of space to people here to backup their files on (Disk space permitting, but i just added 2TB more to the server : ) )

I can also provide hosting if anyone is interested, but i would have to limit how much of that i can do.

I have made a backup of most of the files uploaded to MG on my external HD.
Unfortunately, I have only a slow internet connection in the upload stream (64 kbit/s) so uploading the files (especially the big ones !) to some hoster would take ages. Sad

If max1zzz is so kind to offer enough place on his private server, this could be a good place for a second download source (mirror). But we should still have the files on some another file hoster as a first download source to save download traffic on his server.

I suggest we should give it a try with the files recently uploaded to rapidshare for now !

it's not so much traffic that worries me (I have 20mbp/s upstream and we don't even max that with my main server) More the fact that if everything on my main server is also available at a uncapped speed from me i will loose my uploads, which would kinad make the min server pointless

However, i could offer maybe 250GB of uncapped storage for mg users

Today (12/17/2013) Rapidshare has finally become unusable for casual users. The download of files with size over 150 MB require now a paid account. The anonym download was very slow so far, now the free account (Standard account) has become slower, too. Seems that they try to press the free users to pay for the downloads.

They got also more pressure from the German and EU justice:
WWW.RAPIDSHARE.COM JUDGMENT - 12/17/2013 - How far do the inspection duties? (original link)

Seems that rapidshare will become a closed filehoster like some other ones did (fileserver, …) or will be closed down in a near future like hotfile.
Now we need to replace the rapidshare links with other ones (mega, ubuntuone, …).

Well it's looks like that we can only download larger files once per day from Rapidshare. Attempt to download a large file after you downloaded a large file, you will get this:
ERROR: Daily traffic exhausted, upgrade now! (9fe01260)
Then a message appears stating that the file exceed the free user's daily limit and they require to upgrade their account.

That was the behaviour of rapidshare before until today !
Now it will you not let download files above the limit of 150 MB per day.
I made another free account to test this and he still demands me to pay $10 per month to get any files above the 150MB-limit.

It seems that Rapidshare shuts down by April 1st, 2015 ( Link). All hosted files will be deleted by March 31st, 2015 !!
Good thing that we host now almost all files on our internal server now.

Please make sure that no files are still hosted by Rapidshare. If there are any, please move them to the internal server immediately !!
