Finder Utility Needed

I recently updated my copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader from 5.0.5 to 5.1. But the new version doesn't work.

And now when I double-click on a PDF file, Finder launches the bad 5.1 version.

Is there a utility that will let me assign the version of a particular app to launch when I double-click on a data file?

The Finder option "Open With..." inside "Information" of the file should let you select the version you want. And "Apply to all", if possible.

As far as I can tell, Finder has no "Open With ..." option on my 9.2.2 system. Am I mising something?

I suppose I could just delete the 5.1 version of the app. But i hate to throw stuff away - particularly something that took a couple of hours to find.

What I REALLY wanted is a utility that can manipulate the Desktop DB file. Apple never documented the internals of the file but they may have provided a private view to some developer who then built an app around the information.

I might be missing something here, but if 5.1 isn't compatible for your system (doesn't work) can't you just delete it so the Finder can revert to launching the last known working PDF reader?

"Open With...", you're right.
Instead of, on Mac OS 9 and older, do a restart with Shift key down
until you'll be asked "Do you want to re-built the Desktop file" or similar.
But remove the Reader 5.1 first.

From memory, this may have been a waste of time. Adode Readeer went to v5.0.5 for OS9. While the Mac OS X version was badged as v5.1, it still fired up fine in OS9, as v5.0.5 (in the splash screen at startup). The big diference between them was the bloat, v5.1 had support for all languages and was about 70MB.

The utility you seek for opening files with particular apps was achieved by modifying the Creator / FileType, probably in ResEdit. If multile apps shared the same creator flag, the latter installed would open the dovument. Not sure if rebuilding the desktop would change the order, if it does you have a 50% chance it'll get it right. If you want to make sure, ditch Acrobat Reader 5.1, it's not rare, and rebuild your desktop file.
