Games not working??

Hi, I'm trying to play some old games like sim tower on an old imac "Rev.A" with OS 9.2 on it. And for some reason the computer is saying they're "PC Files" (i don't think it means PC like the alternative to Apple) and can't figure out how to open them. The wierd part is on my ibook with OS 10.4 I can play the games it just opens OS 9 (not sure which one) and they work fine. I really wanna get them working on the old comp so the kids can play them. Any ideas how?

Thanks,
Nicola Reed

How are the games moved to the iMac; ie: downloaded directly to the iMac from her, or burned to a CD-ROM and inserted into the iMac, or put on a USB-stick and inserted into the iMac, or copied cross a local network etc?
If the game files are compressed/archived into StuffIt's .SIT-format and no StuffIt software is installed on the iMac the files might be regarded as 'PC' with generic icons.

The problem might be cured, if the game files are in SIT-format and there's some StuffIt software installed or the files are installers, if you copy the files onto the iMac and restart it. Then do 'Rebuild the Desktop' by simultanously pressing the keys 'Alt' and 'Commando' during startup until the message window about rebuilding your desktop pops up.

In any case please give some more details! Smile

Thanks!

I'll try this and let you know if it worked. Smile

Edit: Sorry you asked me a question, yes they were transferred over with a USB after being unstuffed on my laptop.

The USB stick, is it Mac formatted? In case of PC formatted, Resource Fork is going lost and the result is your description (File kind no longer recognized).

hmm, i had the same problem with the usb stick, the easiest solution is to transfer them compressed and expand them under os 9, you'll be fine then.

i didnt even know the usb sticks had mac or pc formatting, i thought they were blank storage hardware. how do you re-format your usb stick, i guess mine is pc formatted too.

To re-format a USB stick, use Disk Utility in OS X.

Or format USB stick (or PCMCIA cards) with Drive Setup in OS9.

Remember to set it back to FAT32 if you want to use it in your cameras and PCs. I managed to re-format one of my CF cards in OS9, install OS9 on it, but I couldn't get my PBG4 (could have been the PBG3) to boot off it.

Well, most pre-Intel Macs simply can't boot from USB. They can boot from Firewire though; or you could get a CF-to-IDE or CF-to-SCSI adapter.

Balrog,

Thanks for the help, but my PBG3 and PBG4 are long gone (gave to a charity for seniors - who were setting up internet for them at the time). It was just an experiment, and the CF (compact flash card from my Nikon) went straight into PCMCIA slot, nothing to do with USB). As I said, just an experiment. Could see it and select it in Startup Disk, but no boot.

@ Nicola: How are the game files now? Did it make any difference?
