Help me remember an old arcade

Hi everyone.
Circa 2005 I played an arena shooter set in space. As long as I remember (and my memory sometimes fails me) there was a spaceship that could move freely around the screen, cross its borders and appear on the opposite side. The background seemed to be a pale/blue/gray (?) grid quite similar to the background of Souls in the System (I never played the game but I found a video in YouTube). Actually the spacecraft design and flight characteristics seems very similar to Souls in the System, too. The difference is that the game I try to remember had very simple "universe": no separate rooms or corridors, no teleports, no obstacles - just a grid (and enemy ships flying over it, of course).
I don't remember neither the menu nor the music - it definitely wasn't of Souls in the System as long as I can assume from the video... But the player's spaceship and overall graphics and color set of the game has this feel - I almost believed for a moment that this was the same game.
Any guess?

The prequel to Souls in the System, ShadowWraith?

Oh, reading your description it's clear it's not that. Hm.

Unfortunately not, Rezsnore. You know, I tend to forget many things - but more or less my description is correct. I didn't invent this game - I clearly remember that I broke a left arrow key while playing it on my Powerbook G4 )

What did you do in the game? Was it an asteroids clone, did you fight other spaceships?

Apparently it didn't feature asteroids - but different kinds of enemies were present in progression from simple to complicated and strong - each with its own weapon, like in Ultraviolet Dawn - only without me fixed in the center of the screen, but instead moving freely in all directions. It also seems to me that most of the enemy ships moved slower than me but they appeared in increased quantities and i had to control my movements so that I'm always safe. And I shot at them certainly. And they shot at me. My weapons upgradable I guess... and armor too. And I vaguely remember this grid on the background... It sort of helped me calculate at what exact place the enemy ship would appear on the opposite side right after crossing the edge of the screen - that was fun and thrill to watch out.

This sounds a lot like ARES. Check this screenshot, see if it rings a bell:

Also, it had almost infinite zoom... you would remember THAT! Smile

themacmeister: no, unfortunately. I've never played ARES. And the game I'm looking for, had the blue (or blue-gray) blurred grid on the background and the spaceship very similar to Souls in the System.
TheComputerKid: I'm sorry. I've deleted the offensive words. Can you help me now? )

Did you already browse through the Action & Arcade categories here on the site? You may identify the game in question by looking at the screenshots. Take a look:

If this was a networked game, it could well be NetTrek, or MacTrek. A very fine multiplayer/network time waster! http://fatlion.com/nettrek/index.html

You could also send text taunts, that appeared with a satisfying Star Trek beep...

There wasn't a grid when I played it, but it may have now... (I played the B&W version on a networked SE).

Also, it may be GridWars -- but you couldn't exit from the screen, and reappear opposite!

Bolkonskij: yes, I did. No result, sorry (
themacmeister: unfortunately, this is not it.
Apparently I won't find it. Thank you all for your support
