Help remembering a game? It was this weird Q-bert RPG

I'm trying to remember, can anyone help me out? The game I'm thinking of was black & white, so I'm pretty sure it was on the old 68k Mac, and you controlled a unicorn who hopped around a Q-bert style board, trying to turn all the hexagon-shaped spaces from black to white. Your opponent hopped around trying to turn all the hexagons to black. It was a great game, I really wouldn't be surprised if it was made by the folks who did Archon, as it was very stylish and somehow vaguely reminiscent. You even had spells which you purchased, and limited magic points to cast them. The spells helped you move around the board more quickly, or did things like clone you.

Anybody?

I remember this. Don't remember the name though, nor the spells.

I usually have a trawl through allgame.com (there's a comprehensive Mac section) and gamedb.com when trying to help those lookng for old games. No time just now, but if it's driving you mad trying to remember, feel free ...

Bumping this poor thread! I would love to someday find this game. I was reminiscing again today.

Berty, any way you have to jog your memory? I looked on allgame.com and felt like I didn't see it. They don't seem to have all games there--didn't even see Xyphus, my old fave RPG from childhood!

Anybody out there recall this lil' gem?!

@raggedrobin: Pretty sure this is not the game you're seeking but "Bert" is a pretty good Q*Bert clone - only for the Mac too, IIRC

Don't know of your b/w version tho', sorry.

Your Archon comparison implies it was a commercially published title - are you sure of that? If so, the strongest candidate is an obscure Mac exclusive called "Loc", by Great Wave Software. We don't know much, but it was black and white, played on a hexagonal board, and involved animated playing pieces (which could be custom-designed) capturing opponents' territory by jumping across it.

Note that one of the few mentions of this game in any medium calls it "probably hard to find"... and that was in 1987, only a year after it came out. :/

Hmmm. The name Loc doesn't sound familiar, but I really can't remember the name of the game at all. It seems like it would have a "fantasy" name, since the pieces were fantastical, e.g. a unicorn. You would convert the spaces on the board from black to grey to white, and when they were all white, you won. The enemy would hop around converting things from white to black. It did feature animated playing pieces, but I don't remember there being an editor.

I'd really like to think it was commercially released, because it was a good quality game. The art was nice, the gameplay was really smart. In fact, Archon came to mind partly because this was also such a good, thoughtful game. I used to play them both when I was like 8 years old.

I wonder if there's any way to locate the folks who used to make up that company.
